This afternoon, went with a few friends to a Black Nape Terns nesting site to recce and took some shots from a rocking boat.
Shooting hand-held with a Tamron SP AF200-500mm at full extension, I don't think I would have been able to frame and focus on the birds, let only make the shots without AS.

Thanks. You would be able to shoot with a 70-200 f2.8 SSM as some birds came really close.
Also, the experts there told me the best lens to use would be a 300f2.8.
With the boat rocking and the poor light, it was more like scan the flock, isolate one, follow it and snap if focused successful or repeat if not. Anyway, it was good experience.

Its always times like these when u realise how did u survive without AS. ;p

yeah it sure does rocks... cannot live without it!. specially using 600mm lens handsfree without tripod!

Tell you one thing -

PICT0003.jpg

Normal 28mm Lens, same spot (you should see the wood pile in that photo)

PICT0004.jpg

With 2x Telephoto converter & Minolta 100-300mm Lens which makes it into 200-600mm.

Using anti shake - came out really well for handsfree without tripod.

See, anti shake is worth having!

U actually got the lens to focus... I have difficulty getting my 100-400mm with a 2x teleconvertor to focus even in very bright daylight... usually have to go to manual focus...

Really? I used auto focus at 600mm - not a problem. What lens do you have??
The specs of the photo was taken at 600mm, ƒ11, 1/160, ISO800.

I'm using a Minolta 100-400mm f/4.5-6.7... so with the 2x TC at 400mm, it's f/13... probably why it does not focus... haven't tried it again....

From what i heard, the "software" in the autofocus lens could be outdated? I may be wrong, give it another go, if cant, try with tripod see if it does or doesnt?

Is there any way I can rectify that? I must try on the film 7 and see if the problem persists...

i thought AS works only with KM lenses, i.e. not 3rd party ones like sigma, tamron etc?

as for 2x teleconverter, the sigma and kenko ones require a max apperture of f/4 or bigger (assuming you want it at your largest focal length of 300 or 400mm) otherwise AF won't work. i have a sigma 70-300, f5.6 at 300mm so the converter can't work in AF, but at 200mm f4 its still ok.

AS works with all lens. It's in the camera body.

Have tried 400mm f5.6 + 2x TC. on the 5D AF still work but not all the time. A lot depends on brightness and the focus spot.

read somewhere (brochure/ manual/ website -- can't remember!) that AS only works with KM lenses. will test tonight with my other lenses :)

2x TC worked with f5.6 but only at about midday... yes you're right, it works, sometimes...

Incidentally I met up with tankm just on Wed and his 5D was able to focus using the KM 100-400 f/4.5-6.7 and a 2x TC... that makes it f/13 at 400mm... my 7D was not able to focus at all... so it looks like the AF sensitivity has been improved upon on the 5D or my 7D has a slightly faulty AF sensor... I have noticed that my shots are not always tack sharp but it might be due to the inherent softness in the 7D although I have set the sharpness to +1...

which 2x TC was this? i have the cheapo kenko mx-af mc-4...
