Film shooter here. Digital is a waste of money for my needs. Nothing comes close to Velvia. And projecting it on a large screen... wow!

for serious shooting, film is still my choice.

nothing like seeing the pics come alive before your eyes!!

A mixture of film and digital (film in 135 format, digital MF, film LF).

Hiee....

Me still use mainly slides and film.....digital for backups.....

film (35mm neg) + digital shooter here... :)

still in love with film
but looking into digital possibilities in the future
haiz.. must save $ before can do anything
not that i'm not satisfied with film
heh. i'm surprised to read about digital costing more.. hoho me shelled-up suaku..
i know some people who's using digital, and i seem to be the one spending more money
haha doesn;t help when i'm trigger-happy :P
the thing i like about film, is like what snipe said..
nothing like seeing the pics come alive before your eyes!!
but ne ne.. maybe for the same reason, digital is becoming more n more tempting- cos u get to see it on the spot..
but hell yeah-film's for me.. ;)

i am attrached to photography by film and been chasing my passion even though we are in the digital age. Somemore i am in the multimedia field who comes in contact with digital almost everyday.
But i strongly believe that although digital have many advantages over film, there are still some ways that they can never replace film.

1) you cant load slides or B&W into your digital. It will still take a long long time for digital to replace slides in term of quality.

2) you cant play in the darkroom and cross process your film, although there is PS, but you miss out all the fun.

3) you cant claim the originality of your works, since anything that is digital can be manipulated or duplicated. while a great pic capture on film is always a great pic and you will be the only one in the world to hold on to that piece of negative or slide till the day you die~!

I also believe that one challenging aspect of photography is trying to get the exposure right on slide which are well known for their little torlence, rather than shooting hundreds of the same scene using digital to get it right on PS later on.

film is still the best~!
but digital is all the magic~
how ironic ;p

film is cool.

have been sticking to it, and no intentions to switch over......

It's a matter of preference to go with either camp. We should try it out for ourselves and decide which one you prefer or makes economical sense to you.

Bottomline is, don't let fanatics of either camp(film/digital but applicable to brands too :p) sway your decision. Borrow them and try it out for yourself. ;)

Let's start by listing out the pros and cons of film and digital. Do correct me if I'm wrong. This list is not extensive, feel free to add on to them and I'll update it. ;)

Advantages of Film
  • Different films to try out for different scenario. (i.e. Portra or NPS for portrait work and color slides for product photography)
  • Shooting film makes one think more about the composition before triggering off.
  • Film SLRs are much cheaper as compared to their digital counterpart.
  • Full-frame as compared most DSLRs with a crop factor. (FF DSLRs cost a bomb)
  • Batteries last longer as there is no need for LCD review.
  • Better dynamic range than CCDs

Disadvantages of Film
  • No instant gratification. (Though I feel it really isn't a problem if you get your basics right)
  • Have to stick to a single ISO setting for 36 frames unless you wind back.
  • The more you shoot, the more it cost as compared to digital storage where the money is paid upfront. :p

Advantages of Digital
  • A relatively inexpensive prosumer digital camera is a great learning tool for the aspiring amateur/newbie.
  • Instant graitification. (This is the main draw of digital I feel. People are impatient)
  • Able to change ISO settings as and when necessary.
  • Storage media can be reused thus there is no need to buy film.

Disadvantages of Digital
  • High start-up cost.
  • Crop factor. Wide angle lens for DSLRs are very expensive.
  • Too much post-processing involved.
  • Makes people lazy and rely on trial and error to get their result rather than get it right the first time.

lizter, I share your sentiments exactly. I have both digital and film SLRs and to be frank, at the end of the day, I get more 'kick' from viewing my slides or prints from film than digital images on screen/camera LCD. Yes, film takes more work and effort, but to me, the enjoyment of photography comes from the process itself. The excitement of taking the slides out of its envelope, seeing them for the first time, and recalling what you saw in the viewfinder when you had pressed the shutter button is nothing short of a wonderful, magical experience. To me, digital cannot replace this experience.

you have taken the words right out of my mouth!
and the magic of developing your own black and white...
when you remove the negs from the developing tank and see the images... whoa!!!

Digital are still far expensive than film cameras in term of quality/price ratio.
I believe that my Contax T3 would beat any digital SLR camera anytime!

Contax T3 rocks~!

Yeah baby!
The color reproduction and the resolution of the Zeiss's Sonnar lens is excellent! I simply love it more than anything else!
And Contax T3 is very easy to use and feature a best feature of all! It can even let the 'AF lock-on' to the subject and even let you take metering from another spot! (custom fuction 2b) I don't even need to dial on the the compensation dial like the rest of the compact cameras offers (which is at the most +/- 2 stops).
Besides this, it also have manual focusing, close focus down to 3 meter, use of cable release and external flash (via SA-2), slow shutter speed up to 3 minutes, accept filters and lens hood (via filter adaptor), exposure compensation and etc.
It simply great P&S camera! :p

Film user here. 35mm and MF. AF, RF, MF haha.

currently enjoying and adoring slides and MF cameras....no hurry for me to rush into DSLR.......yet or perhaps never.....

who knows???

Just got back my first roll of film ever taken on a SLR, TMAX-400, with prints. OMG... I love the grain & prints.

I think I'm in love with film.

Yesterday just shoot golf fellowship with film as well as digital.

Afternoon they are playing golf and required the photo by evening before the dinner, so shooting film is still the fastest as it can be developing within half an hour and reprint for them.

Digital am afraid may need to do PS and slow down the process. :D

So sometimes film is still the BEST ..... ;)  :blah:
