April 21st Evening Newbie Outing Photos

After seeing some of the other shots, I feel that the better composition is to exclude the floating platform with all its floodlights, and turn more to the left, taking in more of Marina Sq (and the hotels, as well as the curve in the road.

The floodlights pose a problem with exposure, and don't really contribute to the photo as a compositional element.

True... Will take note of that.

This is the angle that I'm thinking of...

Just signed up at imageshack to host my pictures. Checking if it works.

I think contrast is good, but this looks a bit err... too much :bsmilie:
unless it's meant to shock

Yeah! The thing about shooting in a group is that most of the time we end up with more or less the same pictures so i always try to see how i can make a different image. Of course, sometimes it works and sometimes it falls flat.:bsmilie:

Can't wait for the next outing. The helix bridge will be a challenge. It looks like a really "messy" bridge with criss-cross lines and verticals/diagonals jutting out everywhere. Most people take the length of the bridge, i'm wondering if a telephoto shot up close could present a "fresher" perspective? :dunno:

Waaaaaa seems like the outing was very very fun! Too bad I missed the action.

While I was gone, I caught some other action though...

Sorry for the slight OT....

I was there last night. Thought maybe I'd bump into someone familiar :bsmilie:
Saw a lot of people walking around with DSLRs, but only a few had tripods... sigh...
One guy used a big FLASH and handheld his camera... goodness knows how his photos turned out.
Actually I think wide angle works well for the bridge, and going really close to the steel frames.
At the moment, the construction of the "bird's nest" is a bit ugly.
Nice view of Merlion/Fullerton if using a 50mm on DX.

Yep, keep experimenting. I think that's the key to improving. ;)

Sometimes you need to pull away from the group and think on your own.

So is the site feasible for your next newbie outing? In terms of space and crowd control?

Yes, i'm thinking of going really close to the frames and use those awkward verticals and diagonals as a frame for the IR instead. As for the landscape shot, i think the seniors Pauche and Red Dawn have nailed it more or less and the top of the stadium angle seems the best to me as per Pauche's shots. In fact i'm wondering what the view from the highway side looks like?

Flash? Oh, then when an earthquake hits and the bridge start shaking, he will be the only one with a sharp photo lor! Pre-emptive measures taken to extremes... :bsmilie:

View from highway side is BAD... There's an ugly safety barrier between the roadway and the Helix bridge.
When the "bird's nest" is complete, it might be a nice panorama from the bridge to the IR to the new Marina downtown to the CBD skyline.
I couldn't get into the grandstand area when I got there at 9-ish in the evening. Barricaded off. They're installing the stage on the floating platform. I can only guess that it's for National Day, 3 months in advance... ~groan~

location is ok for normal photo-shooting, but for a Newbies Outing, especially if it's a large group, doesn't look so feasible. Crowds are still plentiful at the moment. It could get messy...

this is nice... like the tone ....

Thanks, the original picture was pretty bland so I decided to turn it monochromatic and emphasize the tonality to make the image "pop". It's now permanently on my desktop as a wallpaper. I wonder who the shooter in the corner of the pic is. Could be one of the newbies who came earlier. Anyway, he adds a tiny point of interest as well. :bsmilie:

For the library shot above, I tried the same PP with a sepia tone filter for a vintage look. Sharpened the cracks and crevices on the building too. I like the texture that comes out on the building's surface.

Hmm... no point then. I can see the group the seniors will be guiding grow suddenly from 3-4 to 8-10 due to curious eavesdroppers. :bsmilie: And don't really want to add to the diludge of Helix pics in the forum at the moment.

Do take note of the Fire Installations in May from 14-16 (part of Singapore Arts Fest). That's a must go!

Somebody mentioned the National Stadium earlier. If we are allowed to go in, that would be a nicely private location.

hehehehe you can read my mind? :)
But I think entering the National Stadium grounds itself is not possible.
