Is this how you like to view the internet?

:)

I wouldn't mind if I never saw a Flash advertisement again. HTML 5 has video and audio tags, so we won't need Flash or Silverlight but web developers need to realise that things will change.

Apple fanboys will always be Apple fanboys. I've long given up trying to argue with any. Whatever floats your boat.

Comparing Features: iPad vs. iPhone 3GS vs. iPod touch

Errrmmm.... so there's nothing really much different except the iPad is a hybrid of the iphone & ipod touch with upsize & up price to go along?:sweat::rolleyes:

edit: Juz for discussion sake. Yesterday was talking to a fren & he's using the Ti book from older days. He booked 10 tickets for co. retreat online & cudn't pay for it, the screen was stuck at the payment page for the longest time... more than 30mins. My answer to him was "There's no Java & Active X support in Safari" Then he said, the transaction went thru in less than 10s after using Firefox so i went "Ya, Firefox at least supports Java, so next time when u pay income tax & online purchase, rem to use Firefox" Then we went on to discuss about trading shares & i went "There's no Java & Active X support in Safari, if u want to trade, better stick to IE or min Firefox but Firefox can't do charting cos no ActiveX support" DANG!!

Sometimes, looking good & proprietary doesn't mean it functions well with the masses. No Flash support is juz kicking up a big fuss to "tekan" Adobe only, its a Job's propaganda thingy

Safari has Java support.

ActiveX and Flash are also proprietary, right? Just that they are very common.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adobe_Flash#Open_web_versus_proprietary_plugins

The proprietary nature of Flash is a concern to advocates of open standards and free software. Its widespread use has, according to some such observers, harmed the otherwise open nature of the World Wide Web.[50] A response may be seen in Adobe's Open Screen Project.

Representing open standards, inventor of CSS and co-author of HTML5, Håkon Wium Lie explained in a Google tech talk the proposal of Theora as the video codec for HTML 5[51] (see also the Ogg controversy):

I believe very strongly, that we need to agree on some kind of baseline video format if [the video element] is going to succeed. Flash is today the baseline format on the web. The problem with Flash is that it's not an open standard.

Representing the free software movement, Richard Stallman stated in a speech in October 2004 that:[52]
The use of Flash in websites is a major problem for our community.

Stallman's argument then was that no free players were comparatively good enough. As of February 2010, Gnash and Swfdec have seen very limited success in competing with Adobe's player. Many important and popular websites require users to have a Flash player, sometimes with no fallback for non-Flash web users (e.g. YouTube). Therefore, the lack of a good free Flash player is arguably an obstacle to enjoying the web with free software, and the aforementioned ubiquity of Flash makes the problem very evident for anyone who tries. The continual high ranking of Gnash on the Free Software Foundation's list of high priority projects[53] might indicate the severity of the problem, as judged by the free software community.

Referring to the web's openness, an essential feature is that web pages as well as the files they consist of are coupled together by human readable text. Similarly, the openness of the internet lies in its protocols. Thus, the common practice by video centric websites of hiding the URL of web embedded multimedia using Flash or Silverlight, obfuscating the URL with JavaScript, or using custom protocols like RTMP (Flash) or MMS (Windows Media streams), may seem threatening to the openness of the web.

If Safari has Java, then i really dun understand why so many of my frens using macs r having problems with online transactions. Juz works??

Anyway my last sentence says "...functions well with the masses" already, i didn't say flash & active X is open source. Apple juz doesn't want to follow masses adoption & that creates yet another "format war" & incompatibilities that follows. On a fairer side note, so does every other MNCs, they always want to be special & create their own format & hopefully thru strong marketing, their format becomes "The Format". Some formats we r already familiar wud be VHS vs Betamax, LaserDisc vs VHD vs DVD, CF/SD vs MemStick, HD-DVD vs Blu ray... etc

See the word "Applet DBS Login started" at the status bar? Also, the login text boxes are Java and I am able to login.

I believe what you meant is "open standard" and not "open source".

Apple Safari is following standard like W3C. What other standard do you want Safari to follow? ActiveX is a propertiary Microsoft coding which Safari has no need to follow, it is not a W3C standard leh.

As long as your Mac has Java Runtime (JRE) installed, any browser on your Mac can load Java Applets like DBS iBanking etc.

But on any iPhone, you cannot install JRE, so no applets.

If I am not wrong, there is no mobile Java yet due to security. So, it is the same on Windows Mobile, Symbian and Android OS**.

Please correct me if I am wrong or my info is outdated.

**Correction: No mobile Java runtime in browsers but can run Java program.

Ya i meant open standard. :D

Thx u & nirenj for the update. :) Btw, is that Firefox or Safari? My frens Safari looks a little diff from ur screen capture le.

I'll need to check with my frens if they have updated their Safari & the plugins.

I also hope there can be more open standards to follow, so there can be more compatibilities. Btw, talking about Flash support, my kids & i have been enjoying online simple Flash games a some yrs, haven't had any prob till now. Not sure if HTML5 offers the same kind of interactivity in the content as Flash. Let's hope it does & we're all better off from it

It is Safari and I haven't been updating it. Flash plug-in is supported in Safari. I don't use Safari a lot as I prefer Chrome for its speed.

When going overseas, I faced problem using the free wireless at shopping centres because they required you to sign in (even if signing in as anonymous). Without java, i had problem using my ipod touch to surf web.

I don't get it how come people can say flash/java is too slow/insecure for apple product when we always say it the other way round for PC ie. the hardware and OS is good enough to run the application. Eg. windows is too unstable/insecure when some application hangs/need patching, the ram/cpu is too little/slow when the application is slow, windows hog resources but ipod is great (both hardware and software).

How come people don't realize that devices like ipod touch/ipad has limited battery life hence they need to down size the cpu and performance. This takes away the ability to support heavy duty application and perhaps even multitasking. But for flash, I suppose it is due to content management.

If you are well aware of the limitation and still think it is useful for you regardless of its limitation, go ahead and get it. But do it with your eyes open. No flash, no java, no usb. No facebook apps like farmville, cannot use many services that require login with java (bank, free wireless, stock account), cannot use it as secondary storage when your CF/SD card is full.

I think one has to look at the iPad as a PDA like Palm or Clie but upsize & a little more fancy with colour screens & wifi ability. :sweatsm::sweatsm:
