just want to share my experience with my D40. i used to hav a PnS before upgrading to this. for me as a newbie, it is more than enuf to play around with it. moreover, budget is another concern that i had to consider. so far i can still survive using the kit lens. ;)

my opinion is that D40 is gud enuf for someone who is new to digital photography and can upgrade the body once u enhance ur skill. :)

If you do not own any lens at all, as in 1st time going into SLR/DSLR, then the Nikon D40 is a good camera to start with.

D40 - must get Nikon AF-S lenses, futureproof, since signs are that Nikon going AF-S way.

Many people says that D40 is to be avoided just becos it does not do auto-focus on non AF-S lenses. However, there are people who use a camera's manual focus extensively for creativity. In the old days, it was all manual focus for SLRs and great photos were still taken. Auto-focus is a good thing to have, but without it, it doesn't mean that your camera is dead.

agree on that....I got one too. I also bought the 50 f1.8 and 55-200mm lenses, for me it is good enough lah..

Price wise, the D40 is really good value for the $

Went to alan photo and was quoted 940 bucks. The shop next to alan quoted me 750 !!! What a great difference. Wanted to buy from him since it's so cheap. Heard him asking his boss if got any stock.....with warranty one... I was  and  starting to doubt where he got it from for so cheap, still got warranty and non warranty stock

That old technique again. :nono:
2 situations
1) Grey Set
2) He will tell you no stock and try to sell you another model and so on...

The cheapest I can get is around $935 to $940. Like I mentioned, I helped my friend to get a D40 with a Tokina UV filter, a Lowepro Bag and a Dry Box with a free glass protector for the LCD for slightly less than a $1000.

den u shld saw me liao... haha... less den $1,000... but he give me the price dun look like can so many things leh...

What time are you there?
I was there around 3:30pm to 4pm.

Got mine for $890. From the Oracle....

Alan Photo sold me for $950 last Sunday. For me, I need to learn first and upgrade later when the skill has improved. I bought 17-55mm f2.8 and also 105mm f2.8. I am more willing to spend on lens because I can use them when I upgrade the body.

For D40, when you use non AF-S lenses, in the viewfinder there is a focus assist light that tells you when your manual focus is in focus.

anyone has problem with the D40 LCD screen.. heard that it lights up when one is adjusting the shutter speed, etc. and that is irritating esp when one is looking through the viewfinder.. anyone has this problem with the D40?

I think thats because the camera is displaying all your setting... afterall it doesn't have a mini LCD like all the other nikons.

Actually wouldn't call it a problem. More like a function of the D40. Can disable as mentioned.

Not a problem, just another feature . Even with the D200, best to be turned off too, to optimize battery usage ...

would recommend d40 + 18-200vr if budget allows.....
from this setup, whether need bigger cam, better lens, etc will be a natural process....:bsmilie:
happy BBB in 2007!!!

Bought D40 kit for my sister at a good price. This camera is small but works like a pro for the amateur photographer. She loves the compact size and I asked her to use the "Auto" mode and later when she is used to the camera she can go to other modes.

Her first shot in Auto, the results from her was "Wow!!" fantastic .I am really suprised what a D40 can do.

I myself am surprised  Technology is constantly moving forward, and Nikon has done very well on this kit.
