I'm planning to buy an X-Drive Pro, so I'm wondering if anyone here has used this before? A shop at Sim Lim sells a 40GB X-Drive Pro for $340.
Questions:
- How useful is it?
- Is it reliable?
- How is battery life?

Due to cash constraint, I plan to buy either this X-Drive Pro or 1GB CF card for my Digital camera.

Have a look at EASTGEAR in Peninsular. They not only have X-Drive Pro but other Portable HDD too. Go look for them.

To answer your questions
1) It supports all memory cards including MS Pro. Lightweight too.
2) So far no prob
3) Unfortunately battery life sucks about 1.6 to 2 hours....but you can get an extra battery pack adpator with 8 pieces of Sanyo 2300 or 2500 to last you a very long time.
4) Transfer speed is quite fast
5) Able to view your files after you finish download but only viewing of files. No images.
6) Supports USB 2.0

Good luck!

got my x-drive pro last week. so far so good. have not make full use of it yet as currently no assignment.

$340 for a 40Gb x-drive pro is cheap, got mine 20gb at $349 the other time

Transfer rate not too bad, transfering only the battery can last me one day around 5-6 transfer no problem

MP3 mode is 3hrs or less.

why not get the new drive. forgot the name, check with east gear, its running on 4xAA recharagable which also acts as a Battery charger. all in one. much better choice, and with replaceable battery it'll last longer. unlike the x-drive pro. the extension pack is abit too bulky and doesn't fit into the pouch.

How about the stand-by mode? how long can it last?
I plan to take a long vacation, 3 weeks.. (won't bring my laptop). Will X-Drive pro battery last for 3 weeks? Let's say I only need to use it twice during this 3 weeks vacation..

must bring power adaptor oh, but voltage differ!!!

make sure HDD enough space. but after download don't know the picture exist not

if camera 5MP(superfine) .. 1GB(352 pictures) too much

I had used before and later change to CompactDrive. I advise u get the CompactDrive instead, for these two main advantage
- The transfer speed from card to drive is MUCH faster on this.
- It can use both rechargeable and 4 x AA battery.

:)

It not the 3 weeks that matters. It how many time you use it.
As mention by some guys, the usage time is able in total is about 2.5-3 Hrs.
your 1 time down load is 30mins you will be left with 2-2.5 Hrs for usage left.

So if you really think you gona use it 2-3 times only for your 3 weeks trip.
Yes, it can support you all the way. (even if you are using a 2GB card)

Usage is very simple,
1. Turn on X-Drive Pro
2. Input Mem card
3. Press "Copy" and it will start to copy file into hardisk.

NB: It will auto turn off after awhile once all files is transfered. (In a way this help me save the power, as I don't away look at it during the transfer session)

Hope it helps.. :bsmilie:

Thanks a lot for all the valuable replies.
I'll use it as my data backup too, I guess. It's less troublesome as compared to burning CD Rom... :)

So if I fully charge the battery before the trip and then during the trip only use it when I need to transfer files from my CF card (twice/three times during this trip). Btw, my CF is 512MB.
The battery should be enough, correct?

When copying, it considerably drains more power to spin the HDD. 2.5Hrs is more like a standby timing.

Copying 3GBs will flatten the battery (~60mins).

Let me correct what I asked earlier.. stand-by means "off". For example, if battery is fully charged, and not used at all, will the battery drain itself?

Yes, the battery can last for your 2-3 download (512MB) for the trip.
(I fact, it should be more than that.)

But if you want to feel safer. Just get a additional "battery charger" for a relative small money. (Just need to put in battery to the charger and plug into the drive and use it.)

been using it for a couple of months now...great tool to have...not only stores pic...also plays MP3s...stored almost 15hrs worth of songs to play in my car for some of my long road trips...also been using it as a storage drive for my other large files (movies, etc...)

Battery life sucks...its also not exactly slim looking...I got a newer version with backlit (VP-330) for my bro...looks very much cooler...curvier corners...need extra power source for long field service...but other than that...great companion to have around in your shoots...

bring your charger.

one huge peeve i have with this set is that the Power On switch is located in a rather huge bar on the top, flat surface.
this is relatively easily depressed accidentally when in luggage or your cam bag.

To power on, users need to press both the big button in the middle and the small button above it. So the chance of accidentally turn the device on is very slim.

why not bring the charger along?

Every time I need to travel, I hate to bring charger for every single electronic equipment. To name: handphone, iPaq, shaver, digital camera, x-drive pro. If the battery can last for 3 weeks (in off mode) and ready to be used when needed, then I won't need to bring the charger.

usually my x-drive is kept in the carryin pouch, no chance of turning it on by mistake.

Do bring a charger for it. never leave home without a charger, cos if your battery dies/fail you still have the adapter to keep the device working
