Anyone tested the ultra slim HMC Hoya super slim CIR Polariser ?

I used the Hoya Ultra filters and they are nice ones, just that they don't have a front thread. The Hoya Pro1 series does have a front thread. No difference with the B&W slim series which I used too (had scratch resistent coating and they use brass). Just go for the cheaper ones, they are as good, you really won't see the difference! As long as it has coating.

It depends  Having compared both side by side using such things as 40 + 100x stereo microscope, video analyzers (sensitometers) etc I can honestly say that there's sod all difference between the two in actual use. However for those who insist on the German is superior misconception ... well what can I say ;)

Hahaa, I see you're another anti-German-glass guy, like me. ;)

Not at all, I own and use Rodenstock, Schneider, Zeiss lenses and a number of B+W filters. However, I find it so stupid that people have this one eyed view that German glass is superior to Japanese or anyone elses for that matter. The proof is in the work produced and frankly I've seen so many crap German lenses over the years that I find the whole debate not only boring but often based on pure speculation by the debaters.

Though German glasses have a superior foundation than others that doesn't mean the others can't compare.

It's not the name that matters. It's how they can maintain the standards. :)

Agree with you Ian ... I do not think that any country will produce good things by default ...

The price is also a factor ... A Merc cost S$X, A Toyota would be S$X-Y, A Lexus = S$X .... I think the price you put in, thought not always, will also provide better features and quality.

no only lenses but camera/DVD player/discman, hand phone & etc. people will be turned off if it is Made In Malaysia or China. This thinking is going to last long, at least for a decade.

Even for myself, i try not to buy any thing from China.

Who's not ?

I think that's why people prefer German glass.

I am selling this ... anyone interested ... not using it much ....

Make that at any viewing distance on any print size and make that Hoya SHMC, Heliopan, B+W or Hama multicoated UV filter. :rbounce:

Can I assume that the Hoya filters are a lot cheaper for the same thing?

I have a Canon 20-35mm lens. filter diam. is 77mm. Does it vignet with a normal ring filter?

Just guessing ...

But if your external lens is a bout 49mm (Quite small), it is fairly wide, you may need to get a thin CPL ... but another reason for this CPL is the external thread in the front, this is quite rare in most CPL.

But after I got mine, it does vignette in full wide, but I think it is the thinest CPL I have seen ... it is alittle pricey though ...

But one question that prompted me to try to sell it is that ... "Do you really need a CPL " ?

:dunno:

Vignetting is always a problem with such wide lens. My 24-135 vignettes very slightly when I stack a UV and CPL filter over one another. (not necessary I think on hindsight) So I am not sure if there is still some vignetting with only the CPL although I can't imagine that it should cos UV alone no problem. My filter is a Hoya HMC CPL I think. Normal one not super thin around $65. From MS Colour. Thread size is 72mm. Very big.

CPL is good to have lor. Probably won't use it all the time but I try to use it outdoors cos I like my background to have a saturated look. Rich looking.

I have a Tokina 24-40mm f/2.8 lens. Do you guys think this lens need a slim UV filter?

UV only sure no need one. My Tamron 24-135 has a 72mm diameter and with a normal thickness UV filter it's perfectly ok. It's only when I stack a circ pol. over it that vignetting occurs.

TME: at which focal length does vignetting occur up to? I have the same lens too, am wondering does using a step up to 77mm have to prevent vignetting when stacked with cir pol?

I've noticed it only at 24mm. But if u ask me a little more than that at 26m, etc I can't really tell. But do we need to stack a cric pol. over a UV filter. That's what I've been thinking about. The vignetting is not qutie consistent I noticed. Sometimes, all 4 corners of the prints I get have bluish shadows. But at times only the top corners. Or very seldom I get only one corner with the blue shadow. I have shot with the hood on with 2 filters stacked but it didn't seem to make it worse. Hope this helps. I'm only a novice still.

how does the prices of the slim filters compare to the normal super hmc ones? and are the slim ones multicoated like the super hmc?

I believe only Hoya offers this ultra slim Super HMC filters. That's the only brand I know for sure have. The price is around $30 or so more than your regular filter. HMC's about $30-50 above the regular filters from Hoya as well. I've only used the 72mm diameter ones for what it's worth.

thanx TME, will try out the step ring cir pol stacked on UV and see how it goes!
