Anyone here familiar with Tasmania?

There's 24 hour shopping at some of the big shopping malls on the outskirts of the city. Of course there's always, Crown in the city. There will be no public transport on the 25 and 26 Dec as it's a public holiday and most shops except for Chinese eateries will be closed all over the city and suburbs. Thus my advise rent a car when you arrive. You can drive the car to Tasmania (just tell the rental company) via car ferries. Taxis are very expensive and very difficult to get.

Down here you can easily get more than Aud$10 an hour, working in restaurants, fruit pickers or Asian grocery stores. Just becareful with the kind of people you mixed with, especially in discos and pubs. :sweat:

Just found out, even working as fruit pickers. Must becareful if you are not getting the salary from the owner directly.

Coz the middle man will cheat you and worst gamble your salary away too. I guess this apply to the illegal workers more than you. :bsmilie:

You can alway pick and buy your own strawberries in some places. No need to work as fruit picker. :sticktong

There are alot of orchards/farms in Tassiel. Just in case you dunno, they do have opium growing there as well. :bsmilie:

Actually, Victoria has alot of places to go too. Like Sovereign Hills, The 11 Apostles instead of 12 Nude beaches :embrass: Phillip Island Penguins and a date with Benign :dunno: (Just kiddin, I think most likely working coz the pays is betta) :cry:

Honestly,

There are alot of places to go in Victoria. Art gallery? Opera? Shopping? Zoo? River cruise? Beaches? Gardens?

Even searching for the best Vietnamese, Greek, Italian, Chinese food around town......

Then take a train to outskirt of Melbourne and hop on a steam train around Mt Dandanong...

Country Victoria for scenic and enjoy the laid back fishing trip....orchard.

Drive along the Great Ocean Road on your way to Adelaide...which takes about 10 hours with breaks in between.

Or Driving east toward Phillip Island then Gippsland along the 90 miles beach.....

Driving North toward Canberra and Sydney ...takes about 9 hours(890km). Spend three days in Sydney ...taking ferries by the Opera House...

Or Just Dance your way all night long in discotheques.

It is just so hard to say whether the city is right for you.....but are you in the right mood, right place and the right time.

I been to sydney. so it's out.
I like places with nature. A big field of flower. and Big ocean. or can take a little boat and roller along the river will be good. Laying on the beach and enjoy the breeze will be cool. No shopping for me. And and.. i want farm stay !.. can ride horse will be good

- nature reserve nearby rite?
- a field of lavender and a rose garden hor?
- panaromic view of the ocean while you sleep, eat, and shxt?
- private jetty on the estuary?
- beach front?
- horse to ride? mine was zebra ley :sticktong

I also heard that the cost of living in Melbourne is lower than sydney.... is that true? thinking of doing my masters in Melbourne .... also thinking of doing it in tasmania coz' of the scenery ;p

It is hard to compare...when you study and want to subsidise the expenses...then Sydney is easier to find jobs. And I think wages is slightly higher as well. Overall, I think not much difference, except Sydney is much stronger on the financial side and Melbourne is on the cultural side of things.

Tassie? Great for study...coz it is boring. Apart from looking at trees ...and trees. It is good for you eyes and health lor. Rental should be cheaper but phone bills might be higher due to boredom :sweatsm:

Melbourne? you can alway dropby my house for dinner.....LOL. Save alot of money liao. :bsmilie:

Thanks, been to both sydney & melbourne twice, prefer melbourne as the people there are friendlier and more helpful...... more relaxed atmosphere.... good food aplenty, especially korean, japanese, exotic dips in Queen Victoria Market, Pies in the sky ..... and Miss Marple..... listing all these make my mouth water...... yum yum.... will bear in mind your helpfulness when i made up my mind where to study... thanks in advance

December is the start of Summer, the climate will be generally warmer...all depend on your luck.
Gardens and fruit farms can be found around the Dandenong ranges.
Picnic by the beach? My recommendation is somewhere like Lorne, Torquay or Sorrento lor........
Ride horse? Horse ride on the beach is about Aud$45 for 1.5 hour.
