Basically, speed increase does not necessary means better work flow. One can only edit that fast. Switching OFF or closing the background programs helps increase the speed (like anti-virus, internet access, any monitoring program). This is more obvious in Vegas 7

To answer some of the questions: yes we do directly capture from tape using Vegas (the time code is more accurate than some 3rd party and not opening other programs helps the speed). I personally do not do most of the post, I am basically more of a cameraman / photographer. So not qualified to teach, my partner who does all the post don't like to train our future competitors (HEE HEE) just joking , no time anyway.

In US Vegas is bundled with the SONY HDV cams, just strange that it's not so for rest of the orld.
Me too...but I'm start learning with photo and video editing...as master in taking photography is not enough in digital world recently...

yes. i'm using vegas 6. system is not stable enough. so must have lots of patience.
Trust me upgrade your CPU if u need to speedy process...I'm reluctant to upgrade only till core 2 duo launch...

U mean from vegas 6 to 7 right? Dual 2 core is definitely much faster than all pentium 4 CPU including the Extreme version...

hmm. sadly, i've upgraded from a P4 3.6Ghz @ 4Ghz to an AMD Athlon 64 FX 60...

sadly, during rendering, if you look under the performance tab in Windows Task Manager (press ctrl alt del), only 1 of my 2 cores are working... =(

Interesting... I had some experience with it but I find it hard to get tutorials or help on it in the web... But it was good enough for some simple videos that I had to do....

What's the pricing for the latest version 7 anyway???

I bought mine at $350 at the Sitex fair. It comes with bundled softwares like Adorage, spicemaster etc. :)
Hope to learn from you guys :D

hmm. i've spoken to some AMD guys during the recent Sitex show. They said that equal RAM should be cater for each core to fully use them. Also 2 core will likely mean that it can multitask better, perhaps not on 1 rendering process.

Hi folks! Just to say halo! I'm a user of Vegas 6 and now Vegas 7. Lovin' it. IF u guys need some training stuff, pls PM me. I have some nice training videos for V6.

Hi frenz,

I saw the Vegas demo also at Sitex. Looks impressive. But after I enquired and from what I saw, if I want to have some fanciful video transitions, fonts, patterns, etc, there are many plug-ins to buy too. Adds up to the cost... :(

Besides the Vegas itself, which other plug-ins do you all find most useful? Or do you find the Vegas on its own sufficient?

I particularly like the Gold "magic wand" writing tool plug-in that I saw in Sitex.

Vegas alone can do many things.. I would say the titling is not the best. It can do many effects but it will be really tedious. The plug ins offer a faster way to get things done. Unfortunately Vegas doesnt have many plug ins available. The ones I know are below

Prodad Heroglyph
VASST
BlueFX
BorisFX
Spicemaster

Go on a Vegas forum, there's much more. Also don't forget Sony's own products like Sound Forge, Cine score, Acid, etc. which you could use as part of your post production stuff.

I'm using Vegas 7 now, been with it since V4. The plugin I use most is Magic Bullet Editors edition which can give very nice film-like effects to the appearance of the video. There's also some free plugins from debugmode that work well. Gearshift from VASST allows you to use DV proxy files for faster editing of HDV material, and switch back to HDV for final rendering for maximum quality.

In general Vegas is fast to use during editing because the interface is very friendly and somehow most things just seem to be easier to do. The main drawback is that the rendering time after editing is pretty slow. Edius from Canopus is much faster, both for realtime playback and rendering, but I find it not so easy to work with unless I am just doing cuts and colour correction.

Vegas is also very powerful for audio mixing as it started life as an audio-only programme. In comparison, some other video editing software seem to have included audio as an afterthought.

Hi,

I have a few questions for those who already bought and used their Sony Vegas software.

1. Firstly, where is a cheap place to buy it? I was thinking of Sim Lim but so many shops.. Which one to go to ah? :dunno: :embrass:

2. How much does the package roughly cost? I'm referring to the standard version, not the Premium one which costs a lot more.

3. Does the package inside contain any manual to explain how to use it?

4. Does Vegas allow a blend of video + still digital images? That means, if I want to do a presentation can I switch on-demand between video shows and slide shows of still images?

5. Most importantly... ;p Is it user-friendly and easy to pick up for a newbie in video-editing like me? :embrass:

Am still considering the Vegas and Proshow Gold... Thanks everyone!!!

Hi David. I can answer some of your questions, but maybe not all.

1. Firstly, where is a cheap place to buy it? - The distributor for Sony Vegas is aone.com, they have a website www.aone.com.sg with contact info. You can call Cindy and find out the pricing info.

2. How much does the package roughly cost? I'm referring to the standard version, not the Premium one which costs a lot more. - There is Vegas Movie Studio which is the entry level program, and Vegas itself which is quite ex. Not sure what the prices are, best to check with Cindy.

3. Does the package inside contain any manual to explain how to use it? There's a quickstart guide on hard copy, and a full manual on PDF.

4. Does Vegas allow a blend of video + still digital images? That means, if I want to do a presentation can I switch on-demand between video shows and slide shows of still images? -Vegas accepts most codecs for video, and most still image formats, and you can mix them easily on the timeline. It text and media generators so you can add titles and backgrounds too.

5. Most importantly... Is it user-friendly and easy to pick up for a newbie in video-editing like me? - This is a personal preference. I found it very easy to pick up, yet very powerful at the same time.

Richard

Thanks Richard, I think your advice is most helpful! :)

Hi David. One more point that is very valuable since it could save you money - there is a downloadable Vegas free demo available so you can try out the various features. It will run for 30 days so you should be able to check it out fully and decide if you like it or not. The link below is the download page, you can select Vegas or Movie Studio (or both if you want to compare them).
