Hi,
I'm planning to get an underwater housing for my soon-to-be EOS 7D. Will be travelling to a Malaysia beach resort around June & plan to use my camera to snap some underwater photos.
I did some research online & found that Opteka Underwater Case offers the lowest price.

Anybody has any experience with this before? Will it cause leaks? Thanks!

I wouldn't bring a DSLR down with that. there are many sellers of prosumer cameras with housings nowadays. I think that's a better choice for diving.

Did you read the reviews on the product? (2 out of 5 stars)

But its the cheapest that I managed to find online. Or do you have an alternative source? I won't go too deep. Probably just at the beach area.

Can you give us a field report after you have tried it?

Bro, no offence but maybe since the day u enter this hobby, u already realise that Camera is not cheap and UW equipements for camera is neither cheap too in fact usually more ex than the camera itself so why insist on a cheap housing? I seriously hope it don flood yr cam and if so aren't you require to spend more on a new cam? :dunno:

There's always this saying: "Good things don come cheap and cheap things usually are not good" ;p

If this Opteka casing works so well then I don see why others require to spend thousand on Ikelite, Subal, Sea&Sea, Optima etc

its probably good enough for a day out at the beach and some snorkeling...but i sure wouldn't want to bring it diving!

30 feet is not really that deep.....

saw 1 diver using it when i was at similan 2 months ago.... for his d300.... result seem... errr....lets just say no point getting it... and is the max depth he brought it too is 15m... and thats already over the "30ft"....

to me its not worth the risk...

Hi, sorry for replying late. Have been busy with stuff lately.
Hmm...so it is only good for shots in the beach area?
I was planning more of snorkeling & probably some close ups of marine life near the beach. Will it be able to hold up without harming my baby? ;p

Then does anybody have any lobang for reliable underwater housing? :bsmilie:

I have no experience with this or similar product but I think it should be OK on the surface or just a few metres below. I would not push my luck to 10m though but keep it under 3m. I would avoid using it at the shore line where the current pounds on the sand. The force of the water with the sand could penetrate any weak seal. Anyway, even if that happen, your cam should still be OK as it will unlikely be flooded. But you will probably have to trash the bag. Ops I meant the underwater case.

Hi, sort of OT. Can our DSLR/Lenses withstand the change in ATM? To my knowledge GLASS has very high resistance to ATM, but how about the parts in the camera. Will it have any aftermath effects?

Very good question. The housing is the one that prevent the ingress of water at depth but the pressure within is or should be just as much. I have brought my D300 down to 40m (5 ATM) and have not experience any side effect.
