Hi Everyone,

I'm a newbie, who is looking for a semi-pro camera. Was recommended NIKON P6000 and also CANON G9 but was told G10 will be on sale next month.

Any advice will be appreciated.

Which means G9 price will drop a bit?

Whats the difference between G9 and G10. Whats the improvement over it?

If you are looking to try out a semi-pro camera...you need to find one of the older bodies...of DSLR's...

Canon
Nikon
Pentex
Sigma
Olympus
Fuji
Kodak

Do a little bit of research into what system you like and how you want your pictures to look...If you are looking for a Point and Shoot camera...I do not know...

Personally I went with Nikon, tons of cheap old lenses on the market...However in Houston at the time a lot of people were selling off Nikon equipment and found a really good deal...I also own a Sigma DSLR it take amazing pictures just not a fast and user friendly as the Nikon...If you have a local store to go to...Buy a memory card and play with the cameras and then take a look at the pictures you took and see which one best fits you...

For semi-pro go DSLR...You can find a used good one for around $300.00 with a lens...

Thanks. Point and Shoot is closer to what i'm looking for. Just came back from a shop that also recommend a Lumix which was equally good. But i don't like the fact LCD screen being too blue, hope the picture will not turn out like that.
Another shop suggested a RICOH Caplio but it's all wrap up and i feel bad when i'm still researching and comparing.

Like you say i'm do more homework

Try the Sigma DP1.....it is only F4 but I see a lot of posts about it...you might be able to pick up a used one for 1/2 the price...

are you looking at dslr or prosumer cams? coz i think semi pro means cannot change lens right?
anyway if its a prosumer thn wad i bought was the fujifilm s8100fd... imo very decent for the price.. :)

Hi, I am very new to photography, have been searching for information, was advised that Panasonic LX3 is also quite ok, any advises? I am looking for a prosumer cam for a start!

For those moving to a semi-pro stage when they find that their basic point and shoot is really limited, I recommend the Nikon D60. It is very lightweight and for the same cost (as a compact) and excellent kit lens, can take very good pictures.

For those on a tight budget and who want a really good deal, get the older Nikon D40. The D60 replaced the D40 with some extra features but the D40 is actually a better camera in low light situations.

Or if you want more muscle, get the D90 if you are willing to spend $1k more.

As for why I recommend the Nikon over the Canon brand, Nikon has traditionally been much stronger in low light conditions, hence the phrase "welcome to the dark side" is used for the Nikon brand.

I am both Nikon and Canon fan. I started out with Canon compacts but chose Nikon for DSLRs. I second the opinion on better low light performance of Nikon. Better glass, and also better flash.

But I don't like the D60 because of the lens compatibility thingy. But D40 is another league and better than D60 because its lighter and cheaper even though both D40 and D60 are restricted by AF-S lenses.

If you put the money down on a D60 you be thinking of another body when you advance. Then your hobby money would be spend on a new body instead of lenses. But if you are not restricted by AF-S lense, then your money will be put to expanding your lens repertoire instead.

Get the D90 or at least D80.

Guys... I think the OP has specifically mentioned that he prefers something closer to a PnS model, hence suggestions of small dSLRs may not be entirely appropriate, esp if size and weight is a big factor to him.

For compacts, Ricoh have excellent functionality and ergonomics. The Panasonic LX-3 and Canon G9 (and upcoming G10) are excellent mentions as well.

I'm personally using the Lx-3 as a carry everything alternative to my dSLR. If you want more info and examples of photos taken with a LX-3, just check into the Panasonic forum and there are lots of threads of it.

Ditto for the Ricoh and Canon ones.

Sorry, I meant "carry everywhere..."
