Any SIGMA 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 DC MACRO HSM user reviews?

With the weak US dollar, it's possible to get this lens at below SGD$600 now. ;)

Just got this on Sun from MSC.
$680.

Focussing at 17mm seems to be off in about 30% of the shots on my D200, so I had to make an appointment to calibrate the lens at Sigma today.

Tried the 18-50mm f2.8 non-HSM as well (they didn't have the HSM version), but picked this one bec of the longer zoom range.

Essentially, it's like having a 22-70mm f3.5-4.5 with a 17mm f2.8 tacked on, if you know what I mean.

For those who don't like having to calibrate the lens, maybe go for the Tamron.
But I picked Sigma because of the 72mm filter size (Tamron is 67mm), as I have other 72mm lenses.

Did u ask them how much the 18-50 f2.8 was?

Yeah, something like $850, IIRC.
I wasn't feeling comfortable dropping that kind of cash on my first Sigma, if u know what I mean.

so how's the lens so far?
giving you good results?

So far quite happy with the lens as seems pretty sharp. Some test shots attached. Only thing not used to is the fact that it zooms in the opposite direction that Nikon lenses zoom so needs a bit getting used to. :embrass:

U focused on the 'R' on the word MACRO is it? Or is it that last letter 'R' on the top of the instruction booklet?

wah...if it's the R in macro....then not funny liao. Seems to have trademark sigma tinge?

The boxed letter 'R' closest to the foreground lah. :what:

Forgot to add that it was on auto white balance. What trademark tinge color is that? :dunno:

read that sigma lenses have a warm tinge, slightly yellow. not sure about recent batches but apparently that's the way it was last time.

Hey guys...

Juz called up MS color, they quoted me $699 (inclu gst) for the Sigma 17-70 (nikon-HSM mount). Any interested to get the lens? Wanna go down together and try out the lens??

You may see some of my photos here. All taken with SIGMA 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 DC MACRO (non-HSM).

I think the HSM will be faster in focus, but the overall quality should be the same.

The HSM added to these lenses only enable you to mount and have autofocus on the D40 and D40x. I doubt there is a noticeable increase in speed.

There is speed difference...

First, you can also use the lens with the HSM in bodies with internal focusing motor like D200, however the in-body focusing motor will not be active.

I tried my friend's 17-70 HSM in my D200, and then compare the focusing speed to my non-HSM 17-70 lens... it focuses faster with the HSM since it was the motor inside the lens which do the focusing instead of the one in the camera body.

Ok, so it's verified then. Is it a lot faster?

I didn't really measure it :bsmilie: but I can feel that it is faster, especially when I use continuous focusing of a moving object.

TS, so the f2.8 is from 17-22mm?

by the way, anyone know where i can get the sigma 18-50 f2.8 HSM in stores?

price is around 880 but does anyone know which outlets have stock?

will be going overseas on monday for quite a long time thus am gonna get either the 17-70 or the 18-50 f2.8 before i leave.

;)

I was lookin at this versus the other sigma HSM lens with the fixed aperture.. think it's the 18-50 f2.8.
The fixed f2.8 is EX, so the finishing might peel off, so that's a minus point I feel..and also this one had slightly worser reviews than the Tamron equivalent..but too bad the Tamron doesnt have AF motor built in.

yes the new tamron lens developed has built in motor and will auto focus on the d40/d40x/d60.

is this lens suitable for low-lighting & indoor shoots as compared with Sigma 18-50mm?
