you can try final cut studio or adobe production suite.
adobe is a good buy ... everything that you need is there .

For hobbyist, you should not close out the options on Final Cut Express HD too.

For the pros, there's Avid XpressPro or Media Composer software as well. ;)

final cut studio 2 is also very good buy, cheaper than Adobe premium BUT u need to spend more on the hardware

Hi thks all the input.

Currently i am doing some home editing for my home video for my kids etc, and i hope that it can be render into dvd and burn, so i buy toast 8 to burn dvd.

The current i am using is imovie from the mac, and cannot burn to dvd.

Some i need some simple one can already, which is good?

Finalcut express or final cut studio 2? Which is cheaper?? I spend alot in CNY, so not much to spend.

FCS2 is pro liao.. about 1.8k ba.. not suitable for u.

iMovie can export to iDVD and you can burn DVDs.

My friend is interested in going the Mac way for video editing... He's heard good things about FCP over Premier (which he's currently using on PC). What kind of hardware power are we looking at? The costs can add up pretty quickly if he's looking at a Mac Pro...

You'd need to elaborate on what hardware your Mac has. All Macs come with iDVD which would allow you to burn DVDs....even from within iMovie. And for most basic home users, the iMovie is more than sufficient (in my opinion), but if you're adventurous, Final Cut Express HD is fantastic too. I've used both.

Cheers...

Get final cut express is enough for simple editing. Cost arnd 369. Anyway you can burn dvd in idvd if you have ilife. Just encode your video send to garage band to insert chapters than press share to idvd in order to burn into dvds. Hope this helps.

JK tech. Their hardware also cheaper. I got AE CS3 for 1.5k

yup. mac is the best.
i've always recommended mac to anyone who is into video editing, graphics, photography. All the more with the new OS leopard, files kept are easy to find and very much organised than PC. For a simple setup for beginners, if you intend to do video, get an imac.
Use imovie first. Then once you know the basics or wanna go semi-pro, then buy Final Cut Express. After that, if you wana go pro and make money doing wedding videos or corporate videos then use Final Cut Studio.

I own a Sony HC-3 HD video cam, am i able to encode 1440x1080 video with Macbook (the current Intel Penryn model with 2.4GHz CPU & 4GB RAM) with decent result? Assuming i am using iMovie or Final Cut Express 4.

Yes you can, I cut HDV videos with my macbook pro, 4GB Ram, 2.4Ghz like soft butter..

Mac rocks, I'm using Mac to cut native HD with a Kona AJA outbreak box(whatever its called)
lol

It's a breakout box. Outbreak is when you get a lot of pimples on your chin. :)

Mac!

Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects, at times, FCP6, Motion 3.
