i still dun understand why people like FD system so much? can anyone tell me why?

This is something I cannot explain. It has some of the xfactor that attract me into this system. Further more it is very cheap now adays to find the used equipment.

is it? i can go and see those shop selling the lens at $100+....this is cheap meh? i feel that they overpriced it.

I am one of FL/FD/EF and FD-EF DSLR user.
quite lots of FL/FD collection and FL/FD-EOS adaptors, like lens mount MOD and DIY work...

had used FL 50/1.4 on canon DSLR, infinity works....

i had considered FD-EF adaptors, but what stopped me was the manual focus part.

To thinkvision (and anyone using FD on dSLRs):
do you need to put in a split-prism viewfinder to focus? i've read that they interfere with autofocus, ie the camera loses AF with a split-prism viewfinder - is this true? And if not using a split-prism, how do you focus with FD lenses on a dSLR?

Comparing relatively.. for FD 85 F1.8 to EF 85 F1.8, I can get FD 85 F1.8 at less than $300. I paid $300+ for 135 F2 FD mount, compare to EF at 1.3K . What do you think? Do not see price at face value.

$100 is cheap or not I dunno, you never said which lens and the made. I cannot comment. But dun write bluntly:nono:

I like the FD system because the first SLR camera I ever held or used was a Canon FTb purchased new by my mother back in the day.

So, my view of what a camera should look like, feel like or work like was largely formed by that experience.

Rationally, I know that today's camera are probably better tools in many ways, but emotionally the FTb does more for me.

I especially like the FTb era cams, since they are 100% manual and only require a battery for the meter. That they're built like tanks compared to today's plastic wonders is a plus.

How cheap do you expect lens prices to drop to? Lenses hold their value relatively well, even if it's an old system, unlike electronics. Again, you haven't mentioned what lens was the one priced at $100 (which is cheaper than any EF lens. You know what you're saying?)

How cheap are you expecting? Lenses are precision instrument which cost alot to design and manufacture.

Do not compare with mobile phone or DSLR body which price drop like nobody care.

You still holding it today? If so, please share the type of battery you are using and how far the metering is deviated by using non mecury battery.

Thanks.

hmm....i never take note but i went to adelphi n peninsula plaza...you can go and take a look to see...cannot remember the range of lens he has...

Yes, I am still using the original FTb that I inherited from my mother. It's my primary FD user in fact. I will always keep that one, even though I have two additional FTb's that are in even better condition, but would be the first to go if I sell any.

Photo.net has heaps of info about battery conversion. I haven't bothered yet since I still have an original battery. More recently, I've been using my Sekonic external meter and/or guessing. I only shoot b/w with these old cams; if I shot slide film, I might worry more about exposure.

I think KEH.com gives good indication as to market prices for lenses. My experience is that people selling FD lenses in Singapore attempt to get a pretty high premium. It's a free market, I suppose. Personally, I can't justify spending a lot on FD stuff, as it's just for fun and nostalgia. (Hmm, then again my Nikon DSLR kit is just for fun too and it's pretty spendy.)

But guys, I'm not sure I can take more pictures like that F-1 and L lens. It could tempt me to BUY BUY BUY and put a world of hurt on my wallet.

I forgot to add, if any of you guys are looking to offload any FD lenses, pls have a look at my WTB ad. Cheers. JT

I still have all my FD gear from last time!! Including A1 and AE-1 plus lenses. Looking for a FD 200 mm macro F4 now.

Cheers,

So with an FD to EF (EOS?) converter, the FD lenses will work with a digital body like 20D, (manual foucus)? any metering?

If that converter does that, I will be more than interested in picking up some of these lenses...

Metering yes. Canon EOS meters with ALL lens, including nikon, pentax, contax, leica blah blah...

But AF confirmation to be done only with the AF confirmation chip on the adaptor which cost an additional ~$80.

However do note that due to the distance of lens away from the sensor, it requires an adaptor with a glass to redirect light to all you to focus at infinity.

I doubt any manufacturer would spend alot of having a very high end glass there. Thus it is just like having an expensive and high end lens with a lousy cheap scratched filter, defeats the purpose.

That stopped me from collecting FD mount lens.

Out of curosity..

Is it FD fans, or cheap and good value lens fans?

If FD and EF mount for the same lens being price the same which would you get?

To the best of my conscious knowledge, the EF line up is not lacking in any lens that FD series can make up for.

Only the other hand, i collect nikon manual lens, not just because they offer good value for the price but also things the AF range dont. eg. 50f1.2, 34f1.4 :)

And how do you mount the Nikkor MF lenses? Does the adapter have focus confirmation?

Really want to know more about Manual Nikkors. haha.

take care ur lens--old lens careful, if it get fungi or gel degeneration (para center), it will worth nothing....

I hear you man. Just discovered my FD 35-105 mm is now worthless. Totally. Shame!

Cheers,

If ur adaptor is just a piece of metal, then there is no af confirmation.

To have it you need a chip glued on to the adaptor, to sort of trick the camera into thinking there is some electronics in the lens.

The chip isnt cheap though.

Its quite a shame because nikon bodies themselves doesnt require it.
