Talking about timing, how about a 7pm shot instead? The sky will be in dark blue (dusk), and I'm assuming there will be lights shining on the figurines - that will add to the texture and depth.
Try more 'gentle' light, like near the evening.
Hindu temples are very colourful. Try to emphasis on the statues, make the colours more vibrant. Stand directly at the corner, shoot up.
I too find the lighting too harsh and the statues do not stands out because they are cast in shadow.
Are you using evaluative metering? Would suggest CW or Spot metering (off the statues)if your camera has the options.(if changing the time of the shoot is not an option.)
