Magnification reproduction is to increase the size of the subject. For example, 1:3 will reproduce 1/3 life-size subject on your photo. 3:1 will reproduce 3x life-size on your photo. That's necessary when it is impossible to photograph insects and minimum focusing distance is somewhat limited by your lens or simply because of the subject's sensitivity to you photographing it.
