An Ehtiopian Adventure with M240

About 2 month, I decided to go to Ethiopia. This turned out to be one of the 'hottest' trip I have ever experienced. I brought along the M240, M8 and A7R with WATE, 21mm Elmarit-Asph, 35mm 'Lux-Asph, 90mm AA, 19mm Elmarit-R, 35-70 VE and the 180mm Apo-Elmarit. The only non-Leica lens was the Zeiss 55 f1.8 FE. Most of the time, I have the 35mm attached to my M240 as the main walkabout lens. But I did use the WATE as well as the 19mm for many of the outdoor shots. Interestingly, about 50% of my shots came from the A7R.

The first few photos are from Danakil Depression. National Geographic called this the 'cruellest place' on Earth. At its lowest point it is about 100m below sea level. When we drove through this region, it reached a temperature of 51 deg C! In the hottest months it could go higher. The a/c in our 4WD vehicles could not cope with this high temperature and worked intermittently. But the Afra people who controlled the salt trade, lived and worked here throughout the year. They cut the slabs of salt and transport them with their camels to the market places.

Erta Ale or the 'smoking mountain' is an active volcano in the Danakil Depression. We had to start our 15km hike at about 6.30pm as it would have been suicidal to do the trek in the daytime. But it was still warm even at night. It took us almost 6 hours to reach the summit where we rested for the night. Next morning at 5.00am we trekked down to the volcano and photographed the caldera. We had to leave by 6.00am to trek down to our base camp before it became too hot. Going down was much faster and easier as it was in daylight.

Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to more photos.

OK guys a few more. The Ethiopians, especially the children are very photogenic and mostly friendly. I do not normally shoot portraits, but this trip there were many opportunities.

More photos can be found here http://nns555.zenfolio.com/ethiopia_2014 The A7R performed very well with my R lenses. But the 55 f1.8 FE lens is excellent. Many of the street portraits were captured with this lens.

Thanks for viewing.

Leica cameras and lenses are expensive, but it would be a waste of money if they are not put to good use. I am not a collector, but a long time time user since my M3 days in the early '70s. I have used my Leicas in many 3rd world countries and I have never been threatened nor felt I would be robbed. Just use common sense and be careful when travelling in foreign countries.

Awesome pics!
I was just sourcing for reliable agents to Danakil and you posted this! :)
Would appreciate if could pm me the contacts of the agent(s) you used?
Thanks!

I would be also interested in your itinerary. If you don't mind sharing, maybe this can be public information?

The trip was organized by Photosafari, based in Malaysia. But I would change the itinerary as there was too much time on the road.
For Danakil, the best time to go is between Oct-February, when it is 'cooler'. There is no hotel accommodation and you will have to sleep out in the open air. The campsite is very basic and spartan. I will pm you the email of the local guide in Addis Ababa. Good luck
