The streaks of light are actually sunflare! Just need to remove the lens hood and angle the camera at the sky such that the side of the frame 'cuts' the sun into half or more - your resulting photo will have the streaks over the shot.
I guess in some instances sunflares can be distracting elements in a photo, but for this shot i thought the light streaks would bring out the mood that I was trying to convey (of a scorched earth), and I also attempted to highlight that by bringing out the contrast of it through a bw conversion.
The treatment for the last one is great, I love it. Very nostalgic.
Did you get any of those signature New York type of sunset photo, where the light is just streaming down the streets? Not sure if the sun alignment was right when you went - some that I've seen are absolutely beautiful!

hmmm i'm not sure what kinda sunset shot you referring to, got any examples to share? sadly most of my sunset shots were from an aerial view
