16-85VR is a pretty good lens, but I find it rather expensive yet not that fast (not really large aperture).
What exactly do you find limiting about your kit lens?
Is it:
1) not wide enough - you want wider than 18mm
2) not enough reach - you want longer than 55mm
3) not fast enough - you want larger than f/5.6 aperture at long end
4) not solid enough - you want a more solidly-built lens
5) cannot focus close enough - you want a close-focusing or perhaps dedicated macro lens
6) etc
