Got money then get 70-200, Don't have the get the 80-200
Simple!
BTW i own the 80-200mm and have also tried the 70-200.Both are almost identical in terms of IQ and af speed.

G lenses are lenses which have been crippled by removing their aperture rings to save cost. This is a classic example of taking away features while making customers think they are getting something new. G eliminates many features with older cameras.

These newest AF lenses have no aperture ring. This means that they will not work on manual focus cameras since there is no way to set the aperture.

Which 80-200 are you refering to? the new AF-D or the discontinued AF-S?

Based on your description, you seem to be a casual user and the additional cost of VR lens is probably an overkill for you. Do you need it? Or are you buying because others are buying? My advise is save that money up for a good tripod as well as tripod head and go for 80-200 instead. The 80-200 is already good enough for normal usage (indoor, events, wedding etc). Don't forget you can still employ flash photography also. There are many options and variables out there, don't just focus on just one. Learn to overcome your difficulties with what you have, work with what you have. This will develop your photography skills over time. After you have matured in photography, and your available equipment limits you, it is not too late to upgrade (this also explains why after so many years into this hobby, I never bought much equipment, hee hee) For me, if I want good quality images no matter what the lighting condition is, I will shoot the pictures using remote release with my camera mounted on a tripod in the first place. Why no one mentions about this ever-reliable piece of photography equipment? Hee. Just my 5 cts worth.

well said. i was thinking between the 80-200 AF_D and the 70-200 Sigma but i guess i be getting the 80-200. huge lens thou. Sgporean always want the best. typical haha. if you notice overseas eg: Europe, they really work with what they have. I have seen really wonderful shots done with kit lens and 50mm. gd luck!

Hi,

I would like to introduce myself a hobbist in the field of photography and have intentions of getting a zoom lens for my nikon D70. After doing a fair bit of research i'm left with the following options and would like to have the opinion and recommendations of fellow forumers.


I understand that there is a huge price difference and though i am lucky enough to afford the more expensive option, cost is still a factor of consideration.

1. AFD 80-200 F2.8 ED
2. AFS 70-200 F2.8 VR G IF-ED

Therefore, kindly state your preference and the reasons behind your choice. Your help is very much appreciated.

On D70, 70-200 VR works well with the VR feature.

on FX, go with 80-200 AF-S any day, sharpness is a world better than 70-200 VR.

I do not have an 80-200mm or an FX body to compare. You got any comparisons / tests to draw up to this conclusion ?

I have the range of cameras from F2 F3 F5 FM2T FM3A D700 and backward compatibility is indeed important to me.

I have some G lenses unfortunately that would only work on my F5 and D700.

As far as I can, I would buy a 80-200 on the cheap. The only worry is AFS lenses are harder and costlier to maintain once they act up. I had 2 80-200 AFS and one normal 80-200 lenses before. Quality wise, I cant tell the difference between the two save for the slightly quickly AF on AFS.

I hope Nikon would maintain its tradition of making lenses that are backward compatible instead of heading for the G lenses.

As for the person who started this thread, if you are not planning to add old Nikon bodies to your collection, then buy what your money can afford.....

Typically going for the best tends to stop the upgrade disease.
