If you are just starting digital (esp. FX), and have not a 50mm lens, go straight for the AFS 50mm f/1.4

Assume money is small concern. This is an equipment forum.

I think the AF is better overall (unless the AFS proves to have much better IQ which i doubt)

AF can AF very fast, backward compatible with film cameras (never say never when it comes to THAT dark side :devil:) and is cheaper. probably lighter too

the AFS imho is more for the D40,40x,60 users who need AFS to autofocus. and only if they are sure they will not upgrade their camera body

I always see people comment about the noise of AFD, but to be serious, I think the shutter snap louder than the motor in your body driving the AFD lens. :bsmilie: Btw..who is sleeping during focusing ? Let us know. :bsmilie:

Story to share with you, I heard and know of photographer got chased out of a musical because his camera shutter is disturbing the audience, but I have not heard of the focusing of the lens resulted in that. :bsmilie:

f/1.4 has lower depth of field than f/1.8, though it has higher f-stop.

So I feel that it can't really focus most of the subject, though there will be more bokeh.

Anyway, the aperture ring is more manual adjustment. This lens has been around for more than 10 years and for old SLR.

To TS, no need to read reviews and digest all the ifs and buts and budget and speed and bokeh and stuff and stuff... esp. since me for e.g. don't even own it... how to suggest what are best on what i read elsewhere?

wait for the afs version to be available in store... then buy that together with the af 1.4 n af 1.8 // assume u ongly want autofocus;

then see what u like and where the dark side leads you .............

you can always sell away what you dislike at a loss

:bsmilie: Nice that sounds like good advice huh

i agree with u. but to me, shutter noise is the main thing. film winding noise also louder than any AF lens i tried :bsmilie:
