I had been thinking of a 500mm f4 P AIS series manual focus when this got announced. Now I can't decide which route to go? Will come about the same price. Actually the zoom will be cheaper.

I would wait for reviews before biting. Likely the prime will be sharper, maybe by not much, but MF. I had a chance to get a 600/4 MF (or was it 5.6?) at about the same price in Japan but decided otherwise, eyes not so good anymore for full time MF!

I think the 500mm f4 P AIS can put on a teleconverter and still be fine if stop down a stop, but with the zoom f5.6 become f8, stop down is f11 liao.

For the third parties versions, optical performance started to slide significantly after 400mm, not sure this Nikon version how it performs.

if u have the budget for 500mm prime go for it.
u cannot compare this zoom to the primes,totally different league.
there are reasons for the big price differences.

Not what i heard from the shops with the pre-orders. Quite a bit of 200-500 reservations, but many are playing wait and see for the 24-70E.
