I have just got a new Epson R-D1s. Everything works fine, but somehow, when shutter is set to Auto (AE), I couldn't get the AE-lock to work (Page 24 of manual). What I mean is I couldn't "freeze" the exposure based on reading of certain part of the frame. Am I missing something?

The AE lock is the round button below the winder, next to the white balance selection lever. Press it when the meter reads the value you wish to use. The "half depress shutter release" method does not work.

Yes, I did press the AE-lock button, but when I changed the direction of the camera, the meter didn't lock and changed to a new reading. Is there a hardware problem here?

Did you press and hold the AE button while you recompose?

Actually, no. I am used to using Canon DSLRs. With those, you press the AE lock, and shoot within a stipulated few seconds. Thanks for the tip. Solved the problem. With the R-D1 you have to press and hold the button (and cannot release it) until you press the shutter.
