Advise needed - Should I downgrade?

The pram I've got is the lightweight kind, with only a tiny fishnet basket (which we bought separately) and attached to the seat backing. The initial plan was to allow my wife to bring Chris out, if she's taking public transport.

With my current 5kg bag, the pram will topple backwards! Anyway will trim down the lenses/accessories, and try out. Should had kept my 5-mil dollar home...

When my kids are growing up, i still bring the pram out. (put my camera bag) hee.

Thanks, will keep in mind the f31d if I decide to switch later on.

fuji f31d not too bad. and u can just carry it ard in your pocket. if u have to use a dslr, get a nikon d40/40x kit for the low weight and small size.

Yupe, saves the weight off yr back and really useful when u need to do urban distance travelling.

Yeah, reminds me of a wedding photographer, who used 2x D200s. One with 18-70 and SB800, the other with the 50mm w/o flash. Former for versatility, latter for portraits w/o flash.

I second that.

I got a D200 and the resale price of the D70 is so very low that I decided to keep it as a spare and for travel. So, for travel, I use the Tamron28-200XR mounted on the D70, plus the kit lens, AFS18-70.

Do you mean D40x with 18-55? I would picture the 17-55 looking like a bazooka in front of the D40x!

If you find weight really an issue..

D70 and 50mm.. cheap and good.

D40X and 17-55.. Light and good quality. :)

Same problem here bro....worst when going on holiday. My babe's a 10kilo plus pocket rocket who darts around in the speed of light. Was contemplating the 400D till nikon came out with the D40X which i feel is a blessing.

I am a D2X user (for work) and I lug around my old trusty d100 coz I feel the d2x its just too heavy. I feel a need for change for my d100.

I am still however abit skeptical about the lenses that can fit the D40X. Other things include:
1) The SD card
2) AF area
3) Noise? to name a few.

I would have considered the d80 due to its comparability with the d200. However, the d80 still feels no different (in terms of weight & handfeel) to the d100.

For now its still the d100 :( 17-35 f2.8 and 50/1.8 and the 10-20 (for holiday) that fills my diaper bag.

I'm looking around for a tele as well....and the 18-200 sounds ideal. As i have used the 70-200vr I am not too sure about the punch the 18-200 brings when it comes to colors, saturation and sharpness.

Good luck for your search

Erm i really meant the 17-55f2.8 actually.

It is rather big, but since the D40X doesnt take the AFD primes (which there are lotsa good ones from 20mm to 85mm) 17-55 would be one of the fastest for the D40X.

The 18-55 is not too bad a lens in terms of IQ for such, no issue taking Chris outdoors, but i doubt so for indoor unless you increase the ISO significantly...

Well, now i think about it, D40X + 18-55 + flash might be a good option too ;)

To the best of my conscious knowledge, noise control of the D40X is rather ok, not as good a D2Xs for sure but sure beats any compacts or the older DSLRs.

SD cards, well.. i have an issue with that too but its a consolation that SD cards are dirt cheap. Slighly cheaper that CF plus you dont need a high speed one for D40X, a one time investment in a 4 or 2GB will do, it fact i believe nowadays all come with free 2GB SD at least.

AF area.. wah i almost fainted when i saw the 3 AF points on the D40. :bsmilie:

D40X is worth considering if you are looking something small, lightweight, less intimidating, easier to get your wife, friends to use it takes pics of you with ur precious.

But a D80 to replace the D100... Not really sigificant unless you are looking to print big often.

I fully understand your situation. My going-to-be-2 lil' Alisya is also doing just the same! The pram/stroller will always be with us, just in case. When she not in it, my "rice-sack" will be in it. Just ignore the stares you get when you push the thing around! You know how people are these days. Someone pushing a pram/stroller with a baby inside people do not care... with a camera bag??!!??!!??!!
I did try getting a prosumer S9600... But just cannot get used to the thing. But I will carry that for my overseas trips though!
Just a note - wait till he wants to carry a bag just like Dad's and then decides that its too tiring after a short walk!
Good luck to you :D

That's why I'd prefer to go without flash, if I can't use a external flash. Guess I can try going with just the 18-70 on the D2H, and see how things go w/o the flash. Say, by the time I rush down to pick up the flash, I'd miss the precious moment, and my impatient wife would be waiting.

In fact my current bag is a little to big to be put or hung on the pram. We only bring out the pram when we anticipate Chris' napping time, and when we are going to shopping centre.

Thanks for the suggestion!
That's one of the cons of a professional body. ;p The rest have a popup flash and it can come in very handy..

Photography should not be a burden. If you are asking this question, maybe your bag is really too heavy and you are "complaining" of the weight...

Wah! Power leh, you really carry all those stuffs when you are out with son? :O I gave up lugging around my DSLR liao, and just travel with a much smaller G7 and sometimes a 580ex flash in case of low light situations.

The SB-400 is pretty compact... perfect with D40x+18-200VR.

I travel quite a bit, and have the same issues with you about portability. Decided to go for the D80 as it is small enough without compromising on functions. The D40x is a bit too "function-less" for me. Also went for the 18-200VR; great one sized fits all lens. Nice and small. I also bring along a 50mm f/1.8 for low light photography. It's excellent with kids too - you need the speed! All in all, it's a very light and protable set and covers most needs sufficiently. I use this set 90% of the time and keep the bigger stuff at home.

I use an SB-600 too, but like you, I much prefer to shoot without flash if I can.

D40/x works on AF-S, AF-i, those that don't require the screw drive to AF. I've used the D50 before. Clean pictures, but the SD card cover would get accidentally opened easily.

Yeah, not just from the onlookers, sometimes my wife gives me the "stare" too! She'd prefer that I devote my time looking after lil' Chris, instead of busy clicking away behind the black box. Even changing lens has became a challenge, having to juggle so many things at the same time!

Lil' Chris has been "trained" to want to help carry bags. :bsmilie:

But at least the pro-bodies have ISO boost, which although could be noisy, but at least can get a shot.

Being a first time parent, everything is fresh, and a learning experience. I'm trying to capture the "precious moments" of my growing up kid, as much as I can. Now I'm trying to trim down the weight my camera bag.

Yeah, took my DSLR out when we went for lunch in the neighborhood, and got stared at. Decided to do without the cam the following weekend, but brought lil' Chris to the slide. Damn! Wished I brought the cam.
