that is of course when u know what lens u want. OMG, who would know what lens they need but still buy a whole load of those that they don't need.

ANyway, bro racing intoduced those 50mm or kit lens are lens that are most commonly used.

of course if ur budget permits..then by all means get the lens u need

I just found out from Canon Singapore's press release that there will only be body only, 18-55mm kit and 18-200mm kit available in singapore.

Ok but got some people recommend otherwise, to decide on the lens that is wanted rather then buy sell buy sell.

You are partially right in a way, but make sure you know your limits. (I mean in your spending)
Btw, the prices quote online are not the price that you'll definitly get on the street. Cause they are base on e-quote or after purchase they post the prices online.
You gotta go to shops, ask them for the lens you want and the selling price.
The impt thing is not the price if it's only difference of SGD $50, it's very impt that you know how to test the lens. Make sure it's a good condition one.
Cause I was almost being conned by this store which was selling me a L lens with 1 strand of hair inside the lens. Lucky my friend was there to check and rejected it.

Good luck pal.

Ya, I know what you mean about the spending part. That's why I want to squeeze as much as possible into my budget, so that I get the best possible lens for my needs, which I believe in the long run, it'll actually be more cost effective and cheaper.

Its like buying a 4 tick fridge, which is more expensive than a 2 tick one in energy savings, but long run, electrical bill is cheaper. Stupid analogy maybe?

I'll be sure to research into how to check lens, thanks for the warning. And I think as long as got warranty, I should not worry too much? I mean I will still check.

bro, since you mentioned u have a uncle who is a pro using canon, why didn't u borrow some lenses from him to test out which one is suitable for you before jumping into conclusion?

there are also some rental services here with lots of canon lens to rent and try out...

believe me, most of the time, you will be disappointed after your purchases as you would normally put very high expectation since you are so enthusiastic about it now...

just like at sony camp, many people say CZ is the best lens to get, but still we can see many people selling them at B&S....probably they find that it doesn't meet their needs or it doesn't meet their expectation for such a "high-end" product...

Hi Bro, thanks for your advice. I'll look into some rentals to try first.

My uncle doesn't have the lens that I stated, and that's why I chose them, so that can share.

Saw that 18-55mm kit lens is going at $60 at b/S, so maybe I will get 70-200L with 500D Body, should be able to fit within $2300.
this configuration will exceed your budget.

Ya maybe, but I am looking to buy lens in Hong Kong, I'm going there early May. So lens prices I look at HK prices.

Must depends on body price how much in Singapore first.

I previously used kit lens 18-70mm with my A300, but I find that 70mm is not enough zoom for me. Maybe up to 105mm should be enough.

Later when you find out that 105mm is not long enough for you? Upgrade again? Just go for the 18-200 lah. Personally, i will drop the 17-85mm, this lens performs so so only.

If you're talking about performance of lens, which I take to mean image quality, the 17-85 performs better than the 18-200.

It's all about a compromise between price, performance, and convenience. The user will need to figure out what they need. Sometimes that entails changing, whether it means upgrading or downgrading, or learning to make the best of a situation.
