Advice on A55 purchase

Sony A33/55 uses full-time phase detection for both photo and video where as the other DSLRs with video capability uses contrast detection in video mode. So it is very clear why Sony has better AF tracking when taking video.

With these anti-Sony writers spreading mis-infomation in the printed media, its no wonder Sony is not as popular even thought its has more superior features.

hmm maybe some Sony users could apply for jobs with Digital Life? haha... that would help ;)

A good review by Steve Huff on A33 which he named it "Best Budget DSLR", so much so that he himself bought one to review it.

http://www.stevehuffphoto.com/2010/11/09/the-sony-a33-digital-camera-review/

Some quotes:
" The Sony A-33 and A-55 are two new Sony cameras with loads of features and superb image quality, especially at their price range. Three weeks ago I went into an electronics store here in Phoenix and there was a Sony rep hyping up the A33 and A55. He said “These are the most exciting cameras out today” and even though I knew all about them I asked him why he thought that. He went onto tell me about the resolution, the fast AF, the new mirror technology and the EVF. He said the video was outstanding and the speed of the AF, even with moving subjects were some of the best out there beating cameras like the Canon 5DMKII and Nikon D7000. "

"The A33 proved to have no flaws in the $700 price range. Fast AF? CHECK! Great IQ? CHECK! Easy To Use? CHECK! Extra Features? CHECK! Great HD Video? CHECK! Smooth Sounding Shutter? CHECK! Great at Low Light/HIgh ISO? CHECK! – ok..ok..you get the idea. THIS camera rocks and yes I like it. I usually only write about cameras I like as I feel writing about crap is just a waste of my time and this is a camera I liked. The Sony A33 is a great buy for those wanting a starter DSLR that doesn’t act like a starter DSLR and at a decent price point. "

"The Sony offers rich color, superb auto white balance and the responsiveness of much more expensive cameras. In my opinion, the A33 is a winner and I had a hard time coming up with negatives for this little guy"

today DL compare video capability of a55 with 60D and D7000?!

this shows that a55 really value for money..

its a very very bad review of the A55, super BIAS!!!

firstly the review compares the LCD, and said that the A55's LCD, while able to swivel, it cannot be placed on the table for self portrait. Ok fine if he thinks of this as a disadvantage, its its own opinion. However, he did not criticize the D7000 for not even having a swivel LCD (D7000 is fixed LCD). I mean if u wanna compare LCDs, u compare against all 3 models u are reviewing, not just picking on one brand.

Then the reviewer compares the video mode's sound, and he concludes that the A55 is the worse cos it is able to pick up the sound of lens focusing. I wanna tell him "Hello, that means that the A55's mic is the most sensitive, to the extend that he can easily pick up even the focusing noise." And focusing noise has more to do with lens rather than camera, if he used a SSM lens, there would be no sound. I dont see why having a mic which is more sensitive than the other 2 model can be a disadvantage, it should be credited as having a better mic instead.

The review was exclaiming that the D7000 is so good cos it has continuous autofocus in video mode, when other cameras cannot continuous AF. And then he conveniently skips the A55, not mentioning that the A55 can continuous AF, and infact is the only camera which can do phase detection AF and is the fastest among all systems. The way he puts it, if a non DSLR user reads the report, it has the impression that the A55 cant even AF in video mode...

Lastly it says that the D60 can record video around 12mins, and the D7000 can record video of 20mins, and says that A55 can record around 8mins. He completely skips the fact that the A55 can record 20+ mins if u turn off the IS. When IS is off, the A55 can record the longest among the 3 models, but of cos, he will not be telling the general public this info, since he dont wan the A55 to win in anything.

Overall the review gives a very bad impression of the A55, its like the reviewer purposely dumping down the A55 (giving false/misleading information), while at the same time not criticizing the D7000 and D60 (not mentioning that the 2 of them has slower AF, skipping the LCD of D7000 etc).

I never read DL for that matter, totally bias, untrue and not professional with false information most of the time. I am sure the reviewer is a canikon fanboy or received handsome review money from the manufacturers to twist the facts.

To sum it up, all local reviews are craps.

YAH! i read the article and felt it was quite biased. practically another Sony bashing..

AF! the AF on the A55's movie recording beats the other 2!

I think video wise Sony A33/A55 still one of the best in terms of smooth AF transitions...

The sensor part, even with the same sensor the results still varies as they use different processing algorithm which so far ( till a550 sensor ) nikon/canon indeed produces better noise control.

fanboy or not.. just pew pew pew and enjoy la :sweatsm:

I cant understand others how they will die for the system they are using... as if the company is paying them to use thier products hehehe. i once saw a video of two photographer fighting coz they are arguing about AF speed (the two are Canon and Nikon users).

To me i dont care if you say my cam is lousy etc as long you dont direct your comment to me personally lols if that happens better watch out coz the last thing you see is a flying A33 with monilta 70210 coming towards your face lols :bsmilie:... I wont dare break a knuckle coz I am using my hands to earn money lols:sweatsm:

LOL are u talking about that russian video where the 2 photographers throw their equipment around?

btw have handled N and C before... kind of like the way the N handles :)

sometimes we have to understand that... some people are just shallow :p
i guess all we can do is laugh at the reporter for being unprofessional ^_^

Yeah that video Hehe they fight and throw their gears hehe.

I've tried nikon also as my younger bro is using D90. I dunno why I end up in Sony haha.

i dont like the handling of Nikon. My company has a D90, I get to play with it alot, and I find that Sony Alphas are much easier to use.

Those who never tried out A700/850/900 before, u should go to Sony Style and play around with it. Simply love the handling of the A850, especially the MF/AF switch at the back of the body.

HAHA i'm the only one in my family using a DSLR... but the rest of my friends are using C and N.

YEA. Alphas are easier to use though. although i love the sound of the 1DMkIII shutter :p. sooo... nice. but i've tried the D3 and.. though heavy... it feels solidly reliable.

haha. but the A850.. whoosh. can't wait for the FF update. BBB time!

Bro, ...thats a weapon lah ! ;)

A few times I went into camera shops with my A55 and the canikon crowd there kinda like laughting and making bad Sony jokes, I simply dial my A55 into 10fps mode and squeeze off 2 secs of shots at them !

...The immediate silence and looks of amazement is like 'VISA' ....Priceless ! :bsmilie: ...the A55 could just as well have been an AK-47 !

ps: 10fps sounds slightly different with different lenses ...my favourite is the killer shutter sound of the A55 paired with the 35f1.8 prime.
