Advice needed: Canon EOS 7D or Nikon D7100

Hi guys,

Thanks for the all the inputs and experiences regarding the 7D. I really appreciate it.

I have thought about it alot and I have found my underlying reason to buy a new Body - The 650D has failed a couple of times and i want a body to replace the 650D, and yet keep my fixed 650D as a spare body.

My experience with canon has been very good. and why my 650D gave me problems was due to my negligence resulting in water entering the 'non-resistant' 650D body in a sizable amount and doing some permanent damage.

Therefore,

1. It doesnt really make sense for me to buy a nikon or another brand - Then i would spend more to buy an extra set of lenses etc etc

2. The 70D has similar performance to the D7100, although i still feel that the D7100 is better (however the extra expenditure is not well justified for me)

3. The 7D and 70D have a similar price point.
- the AF system from the 7D is now in the 70D
- The 70D is rated at a weather resistence of the EOS 1-N - which is what canon said when they made the 7D - thus both cameras should have similar resistence.
- and the 7D better than the 70D mainly in the aspect of a magnesium alloy body. but if i do take care of my camera that isnt much of an issue.

Thus, the 70D actually seems like the better choice between the two.

4. I realise that weather resistance is not weather proofing, and cameras do last, given good care and maintenance in most cases.

Since i mainly need a spare body that is better than the 650D, I am leaning toward getting the 70D. (also due to the PPP that gives me a good price).

Anyway I will not jump to a decision as you have suggested, and i shall give myself a few more months and maybe get myself a xmas present at the end of the year.

DigitalRev TV had a video on D7100 vs 7D. Feel that most of their videos are more of entertainment, but still can take a look. They had few others on 7D too, eg 7D vs 70D etc Nikon D7100 vs Canon 7D Video Canon 7D - Hardcore Durability Test Nikon D7100 First Impression Hands-on Had used my 7D in drizzle before, lucky mine still working fine.
Yes! i watched those and they do seem very real. which is why i thought that if i did upgrade i should buy a 7D. but my reasoning which has been affected by all the posts here and some careful consideration of 'want vs need', and value for money, has now led me to favour the newer 70D instead and wait a month or two. Thanks bro!

I'm a nikonian (D7100) but at time I also do go and play around Canon DSLR in Vivo. Personally speaking performance wise, Canon seems better to me. I tried their new 70D. Very impressed with their AF and burst. Compared to my D7100, mine is pretty laggy when burst truthfully speaking. IQ I do not see any major differences. Focus Spot on. As for 7D, I have no doubt that I'm fan of it last time. The reason I'm into Nikon is due to price (Back then D5100 is more affordable compared to 600D) and ergonomics. Otherwise Canon would be my next choice :)

the grass is always greener on the other side...
I own a 7D, although the camera is quite fantastic, it's bugging me in 2 things:
- For sure the camera is not weather sealed as advertised, took it for a quick shot under rain but still covered by umbrella, but maybe some water leaked and the camera died. Wait for a week for the camera dried naturally inside the dry-cab, then bring it to the CSC. Lucky, the CSC not say or ask anything, and since still under warranty I'm not loose any penny. Kudos for CSC, not for the 7D.
- Focusing is fast but not accurate. The AF lock the target, but the result is out-of-focus. Maybe because of the lens or the aperture, I'm using the 85mm f1.8 and 70-200 f4 L. The focusing better on my 17-55mm f2.8

just my 2 cents

Yes i realise that canon says the same thing for the 70D and above up until 5Dmk3 - that the weather resistance is equivalent to the 1N. Which really does not say much about how good the seal is.

Their advertising comes across as if the cameras of a lower single digit are better in every area than the one below it - that the 5D is better in all areas compared to 6D and 7D compared to 70D and so forth.

However right now it does seem like the 70D is a better buy than the 7D. P.S. I hope CSC does the same for my 650D.

Lewissac,

Thanks for the comparison, being a d7100 user. No camera is perfect. And there will always be something better, thanks to marketing :)

I felt that the 650D was better than the D5200. And at that time was wasn't thinking of getting anything more advanced.

For the meantime, maybe you want to rent a 70D or 7D and try which one you're comfortable with it.
The 650D is a non weather sealed body, one occasion during my photo outing.
The rain was so heavy that my 650D was damaged despite I had placed it inside the camera bag.
I almost had to pay a hefty price for the repair as luckily the service guy say that the water penetrated through
the dial on the body and not entirely into the camera.
Despite now I owned a 5DMKIII, I just brought a lowepro flipside 400 with in build raincoat to prevent such
thing from happening on my 5DMKIII.

It weather resistant but not water proof.
Same here, when out using my 5dmk3, I try avoid shooting in rain if possible.

well..something i believe in.

The more you worry. The more the gear will be damage. If it really worries you. Then save yourself the trouble. Dont bring it out. If u have no choice. You have no choice anyways.
Weather sealed does not mean it will be 100% ok. Likewise, No weather sealed does not mean 100% it will be damaged.

I havnt use Canon camera before as I'm on the Sony system.
Almost..or should i say. Many of our (Sony) gear are not weather sealed. But I've used them quite often in light rain (whole camera n lens got wet). So far.. I have never encounter any problem before. Just wipe it dry as soon as you are done or every now and then in between whenever u have the chance.

Also..yea. Weather resistant or not. They are not water proof..

Cameras splash or water resistant , doesn't matter much, if you're the type of once-rain-run-road-take-cover type of person. :)

My advice is if weather is not good, don't shoot.
If want to shoot, have to bring rain cover or cover to prevent damaged to both the body and lens.

But if you are going to get a Pulitzer Prize winning shot, please go for the shot even if it mean your camera is going to die in the rain. ;)

there is a quick comparison by Tony Northrup on '70D vs 7D vs 5D Mark III: Canon Wildlife & Sports Camera Review' if you are into wildlife & sports photography lhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jqc5jwR0uuw interesting...

Thats an interesting video. I see his point, and i am actually turning towards the 70D.

Its more advanced than the 7D.

And i am beginning to see all canon bodies that are weather resistant to be of similar resistance. I had initially thought that the 7D was more water resistant.

I do know that my K30 weather sealing is up to the task.
Have used it in the rain and let the raindrops pelt onto the back of the camera w/o an issue. (my lens was not sealed though, thats why I kept the camera 'back up' to the rain)

I've also used it in more extreme conditions with the cheap weather sealed kit lens too.

But this sort of thing is hard to say 'bad luck' or forgot to plug back a rubber seal properly before use and the camera can be toast.
There are those who just poured water on their weather sealed camera and it was damaged.

IMO, your choice is pretty clear.
Save the lens money by staying with 7D or 70D.
D7100, you still got to sell off stuff and also buy weather sealed lenses (these are not cheap for Canon or Nikon).
Maybe look out for a 2nd hand 5DII too (not weather sealed, but a good deal of a camera now IMO). :)

From my personal experience, I liked the 7D, having owned one for quite some time now. The photos taken are beautiful... AF speed is good and accurate (not sure why the many complains). And if you see the way I abused my 7D, you know it is one tough cookie and there are others that brought the 7D to extreme weather location with no problems at all.

If the 70D retain the 7D's weather proofing, it should not be a problem.

70D shared the same AF system as the 7D so you can be sure it is pretty good. The hybrid AF system is fast and decisive... So it should be very good.

Also it is not true that D7100 is superior to the 70D... and vice versa. Both cameras had their own unique superiority as compared to each other and it is highly inaccurate to say one brand is better than the other. It all boils down to how you like your camera.

I would say that getting the 70D is worth the money... or if you can wait, wait for the 7DmkII...

Thanks everyone, this has been very informative and i've learnt some interesting things over the last few days.
