hi gadrian, Wah! i've been eyeing the same stuff as u!!
i was really thinking of getting the 12-24 sigma as well...
1. coz cheaper
2. coz it can be used on full frame as well...

however, im a user that absolutely requires to protect lens with a good uv filter, and the 12-24 sigma doesnt allow that... it doesnt even have facility to put in cokins or any screw on filters... i often use GD and ND and polarizers... so bo pian.. and im also super paranoid abt scratching the lens... the sigma 12-24 mega POPEYE bulbous lens looks waiting to kana scratch...

thats the main reason why i think i'll have to go with the 12-24 nikon instead....

i also read from DPREVIEW, that HENRY GOH feels the 28-75 is brighter, better resolving power too than the 18-70... but its slightly larger/heavier, and not as goood general purpose as the 18-70....

he also posted a fantastic studio shot with the 28-75. looks good...

but since im getting the 12-24 anwytay, i think i'll probably go with the tamron...

I have gotten used to it.. lenses without protection.. coz many of my lenses cannot use protection.. One of them is the 14mm f2.8, 16mm FE and also 8mm FE. So I have gotten used to it..

just have to take a little better care of it..

been using the 28-75Di...very happy..
next i'll go for the 12-24.....

here's a quote from henry goh from dpreview forums:

"The Tamron is slightly sharper and a little warmer than the 18~70mm. However, the Tamron has very short DOF when opened up below f/5.6. I think to get really good photos out of Tamron, you need to shoot at about f/11 ~ f/22.

The 18~70mm is colder in tone. Overall sharpness is ok but not great. It is lightweight. But one observation is that the front part of the barrell is in 2 sections. So when you zoom out fully to 70mm, the 2 sections are extended. So far after 3 days, I find the zoom ring getting looser and I don't like that.

I hear good things about the Nikon zooms but for the f/2.8, they don't come cheap. So for now, I'm quite happy using the Tamron because I have not really made up my mind what are the focal lengths I wish to keep in the longer term. I have too many manual lenses and probably will start selling them off because I'm duplicating the same range as I go along, in AFS.

Henry Goh"

I think this pretty much confirms me getting the 28-75 tamron...

But now im still debating if i shd get sigma 12-24 or the nikon 12-24 dx.

main good point of the sigma is FF compatibility and cheaper price... but i HATE lenses w/o filter threads... i ALWAYS manage to get oily fingerprint on the lense, and when i try to clean it out, always make is worse... argh.. and each time i put the lens solution and rub, i feel like as if im rubbing off more and more of teh multicoat.... arggh!!!! ;( ;(

hi guys, hahhaah i have decided to go with non nikon lenses... tamron 28-75 + the sigma 12-24.. i decided that apart from no lens filter thread, the 12-24 advantages outweigh the nikons... the inbuilt lens hood would protect my hand from brushing against the lens i guess...

+ with the cash save, i can also get anohter 50/1.8 / sb600 / 800....
main thing is once nikon goes full frame, i can still reuse these lenses!!

gadrian: in conclusion, i think yours is a good decision to get the sigma... let me noe how it is when u get it!

thanks for all ur advice thus far...

thanks.. though my decision is not coz Nikon may go FF one day.. but coz I still want to use my lenses across my bodies.. which includes my film bodies..

Zaren,

I know.. but I cannot edit it.. coz of the signature length limit.. bloody limits!!!!

I have a D100. I'm using Nikkon AFS 24-85 f3.5-4.5 for the D100 & also have Tamron AF28-75 f2.8.

I did a comparsion of both lens on my D100. I'm really shocked that Tamron is much more sharper than Nikkon under the same setting. Colour is also much better.

I would said Tamron 28-75 is better than Nikkon 24-85. Well, Nikkon 24-85 is almost the same as 18-70 in term of specification.

Now, most of the time I'm using the Tamron for D100 and FM2, as I have sold away my nikkon len. However I eyeing at the 18-70, 'cos I really need the wide angle.

18-70 = wide to mid-telephoto for DSLR

28-75 = not so good in term of wide angle for DSLR. But if you want quality of your photo, this is a very good & cheap lens. :bsmilie:

Hi ah siang, thanks for ur input!! wah i can't believe its even better than the 24-85.. this more or less confirms my getting the tamron then.. what filter size thread it use do u noe?

also, why not get the sigma 12-24 for wide angle? it will go with ur 28-70 very suitably.... its supposed to be better than the nikon 12-24 as well... cheaper too! and can work on FF camera too!
