[adrewine] ~ Around the World with Oly

hi andy,
after the "a note to god", "quiet time" might fit better for the serenity & tranquility of photo 334... ;)

anywayz, great shots; as always. keep 'em coming!

btw, did Oly S'pore pass you a E-P3 to try out? or
are you thinking in getting one?

edit: adder in blue

Thanks Jim........."Quiet Time" is definitely a better fit so have changed it already.

Yes........E-P3 is indeed very very tempting......I wish, dream and I hope that my prayer would be answered shortly!.........hehe!

I was pleasantly surprised that many people have switched to the mirrorless system and/or have already considering the switch..........in Singapore and Japan!

The lenses are small and light weight and very well made..........The 8mm-f4, 12mm-f2, 17mm-f2.8, 20mm-f1.7, 25mm-f1.4, 45mm-f1.8 and many more zoom lenses. The most important thing is that they all handled very well in the hand and also well balanced.

The 3 attach on converters are also very good......the best price I've checked for the combo is about S$400 after discount and VAT.

The Pentax Q is not out yet .... looks good but feels toy-like and not serious enough.... maybe because they have only the fake models on display.

The Sony NEX system on the other hand is looking very awkwardly when they pairs with the bigger zoom........it is so lopsided and mismatched...........

The Panasonic GF3 is so small and cute! but packs in a DSLR sensor and touch screen control! I think it will be a hit with the ladies market!

Couldn't try the VF-3 viewfinder cause it's not out yet.......

Many girls I know who bought the PEN series is because of the ability to 'skin' the camera to their wishes and still looking chic!......

Well here's to you my friend a shot from the Land of Raising Sun! Cheers!

nice series...!!! how's the radiation scenario in japan?

i am really forward to a 25/f1.4 vs 12mm/f2 review. as it is i already do
not like the distortion of the 12mm for close range shooting. 45mm/f1.8
or 45mm/f2.8 is another lens i will consider after the 25mm/f1.4

don't rule out the G3 which according to some ungmoh is better than
the E-P3.

viva m4/3...!

P/S:
i can never predict the outcome when using the dramatic art filter.
photos usually come out with too much dark patches. #337 doesn't
seems to have any... how is it done?

Thanks Jim............Life goes on as per normal in Tokyo but those bright neon lights in the well known Ginza area in the evening were rather dim and gloomy maybe because it had been raining the past few days and also due to the blackout curfews.

Yes the 25mm/f1.4 lens will be a very popular and versatile lens for walk around use......the 12mm/f2 will also be equally good just that one has to be careful when shooting at close range but then again one can also use the distortion for creative shooting.........

Well the UWA 9-18mm lens will do it for me for my usual walkabout use.....and the other lens I'm thinking about is the 14-150mm tele zoom .........the last time I use it I just couldn't gel with that lens........and also maybe I didn't spend enough time to know the lens characteristic well.........will give it another try.........

And yes the G3 handling and its EVF is simply surperb!
However its form factor is another style all together........it belong more to the the DSLR type whereas E-P and the GF series are more comparable.

For those shooting with the longer and heavier zoom lenses I think the GH and G series will handle much better...eg the Pana 14-140mm and 100-300mm and the Oly 75-300mm.

Yes the creative dramatic art filter is very tricky to use......always produce very interesting pictures but it is not meant for every other kind of shots. One needs to go easy on it.

The dark patches can be rather irritating at times I know............As the dramatic art filter algorithm is not so sophisticated yet ......so one needs to watch out for uneven and/or clustered objects around contrasty horizon especially the skyline when composing your shots........ the good thing is you can see the patches in the LCD screen.......recompose your shot until the patches disappeared or reduced OR re-adjust your exposure......usually a -0.7 to -1 compensation will do the trick.......

Hope that helps......otherwise lighten the patched thru' pp.......hehe!

great tips... on dramatic art filter. sometime, we don't get the
time to recompose. subject won't wait... :bsmilie:

lazy me, spend minimum time on pp on sharpness, contrast and
brightness only. :p

the only disappointment i have on the new 1242IIR that is
package as kitlens with the ep3 is purple fringing aplenty. i
thought oly would have put in a "better" lens on it highest
end pen. and boi, was i wrong. otherwise, it quite good.

Thanks Jim........Generally, dramatic art filter is not very good at taking subject that moves........and I'm still learning and exploring what kind of shot it is good at..........

Yes... with Oly jpegs one needs minimum of time on PP only.......More enjoyment time for shooting and less time on PC!

Is your copy a lemon? I know some of the best lenses and cameras have problems too.
Have you tried shooting with another similar kit to test? Otherwise send it back to Oly to use as Paper weight!

Maybe you might like to check it with other forum members on this issue..............This lens is still pretty new in the market.........

Well here's another OOC shot taken with the creative "Pop Art" filter...........Enjoy!

Thanks Jim........Ok! Let's Oly M'sia check the lens and we'll move on from there.........

I myself have also encountered some issues previously with bodies and lenses but Oly Sin always take good care of them.............Oly has upped their game several notches.........They now provide excellent customer service and deliver top-notch maintenance repair job also...........

I'm sure other camera service center also provides great service as well...........Canon SIN did a wonderful job on my PnS camera many years ago.........

rickshaw japanese style - pushing???

Hi Jim........I believe that the Rickshaw man are required to face his passengers in a conversation as it is considered very impolite or rude in Japanese culture not to that's why one would likely to see many of these guys on the street occasionally slowing down to turn around and stopping on the side whenever they need to explain something.

Just for the record............ here's another shot of a man actually pulling the rickshaw .......hehe!
I also noticed that all rickshaw men wore a special kind of shoes for better traction and pulling on the street.

ok, then... thanks, andy.
that explain why the rickshaw is facing the passengers.

That means you better choose one that you do not dislike his face ,
otherwise the journey would seems to be a very long one .

Thanks for sharing such nice photos (add oil).

which they route around later for more opportunity ............

Here's the good looking ones for you my friend........Cheers!
