[adrewine] ~ Around the World with Oly

You've got the E-PL2! How is it compared to E-PL1 in terms of ergonomics, IQ and speed? From reviews the grip is better, kit lens has major improvement in AF speed and does not wobble.

Hey Andrewine. This thread so deserved to be sticky! Congrats.
Can u give us a quick review of EPL2 and samples taken with the 3 attachments.
I am in the midst of moving from 4/3 to m4/3.
Also, can you share some pic taken in deep snow; and it's exposure settings. Tks

you sir, are an inspiration to all beginner enthusiasts proving that skill > any expensive top end gear. i think your photos are lovely, especially their composition. Also, i'm very envious that you are able to travel to so many places around the world. Keep snapping!

Thanks lemonaid for dropping by..........yes i think it's better to improve on one skill first before spending to much $$$ on high end stuff
and too many 'L" enses.....hehe..........No offense to the C and N group.

As you can see many "amazing pictures" can be achieved using only entry level camera and kit lens......which the E-PL1 now cost way below $700.

From my 2 days of limited hours of usage I can say that everything you heard about the E-PL2 is true and everything else is very 'much more better' also........to me the E-PL1 is already a very good camera for a common lay man on the street.

Yes the grip is now more ergonomic and the feel is much better also; the AF speed in bright day light is about the same/faster but the acid test would be to try out in a dim and low light conditions how much faster/accurate/better than the former; and yes the MkII does not wobble and also zooming is much more smoother and quieter..."noiseless".
What I like more are the mind boggling amount setting one can play to set your own customization.

I can't wait to see what Oly will bring out next for their high end E-P3?

I only wish would be if they could incorporate the EVF into the body, add more speed dials, variable/tilted screen and more art filters...... tall orders? I don't think so.........When that day comes in the very near future it will be " No Horse Run' for the rest of the competitors liao..........

As you can see the future is going to belong to the "mirrorless".........

Thank adrewine this shot make my mind very relaxing thank for sharing :heart:

Thanks Tarzanboy.......I'm glad you enjoyed the photo.

Thanks petersim.

I'm not much of review writer but I can say for sure is that in the real world handling it is so much better in the sense of making/accessing quick adjustments to the many features and setting in the camera......almost similar to many higher end DSLR models liao......

The Creative "Dramatic" Art filter is interesting, not perfect and quite tricky to use but Oly is getting there with every new model they come out.........it can only get better

The "Diorama" art filter is mainly used for creating "miniaturization" effect but I preferred to use it for other creative effects as can be seen from my shots.

I would like to see the "Cross-Process", "Pano", " Orton", "Old Film" and many others art filters incorporated into the next PEN series.

You know moving from 4/3 to m4/3 is quite a seamless transition laterally. Many of your 4/3 lenses can also be use on the m4/3 albeit with an adepter........plus with many many more other lenses in the in world.

And many of the m4/3 lenses are of very good /high quality also.....

This system is small, light weight, good value for $$$, high quality, less bulky and many many more to think of .......

As for taking pictures in the snow I usually put + 0.3 to +1 exposure in the compensation. Use the live view or check on your play back screen to gauage your exposure..........Oly screen is very accurate with their WB and exposure shot.

Here's another art filter shot from the newly acquired E-PL2 camera for you guys......

Cheers!

Hi Andrew! Have been following your thread for long time. Very inspiring photography indeed! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and wonderful photographs with us. As the cliche phrase goes "it's the man behind the camera that makes the photograph" and your photography is an embodiment of that ahaha. Glad this has become a sticky!

By the way, do you mind sharing where you ordered your 3 converters for your 14-42 mk II ? Can't seem to find it in SG (perhaps you are sponsored by Oly )

Thanks benjamin for dropping by............ I'm glad you find my photography inspiring.

I tried hard to be selective/stringent of what I will post here ( most of the time self critic )........only pictures that are of special meaning to me either in terms of technical/artistic difficulties or challenges..................

...........as a free and easy walkabout shooter I'll go where the wind blows and sometimes only by pure chance will I get one good decent shot and even more precious is when they are neither staged nor posed.

So when the going gets tough the tough gets going on a walkabout......hehe.

Well as to the 3 converters I think currently even Olympus Singapore don't have it.............I was told it would be available only sometimes in May by an reliable insider..........;)

Great composition and shots as expected

Are you able to control the grainy film and dramatic creative filters well? I realised that by playing with the exposure settings and controlling the flash settings, the effects can be very different!

 any leaks on the predicted prices of the converters wahahaha

Thanks Benjamin,

Yes these creative art filters are not easy to use at all and best used only under certain situations for aesthetic enhancement.

These Art filters are not meant for "purist photographer" but are for those who are more artistically incline towards experimental and creative photography.......that's why they are called "Creative Art" filters and especially with the E-PL2 one can almost tweak every setting in the camera to achieve any effects to one's heart contentment (song song) without going thru' PP in the computer.

The "Grainy Film" art filter is more straight forward to use as compared to "Dramatic" filter. As I'm very new and unfamiliar to the latter usage I find it rather tricky to obtain the desirable "HDR" effects without over cooking it...........hmmmm........looks like I need to play and shoot more often with it.

One must train the eye to see thru' the lens and the heart to feel thru' with these art filters.

As for the 3 converters I don't have any ideas on the pricing at all......so far I've shot with only 1 kit lens ......my setup is small, light and simple........but if any kind soul out there would T-loan me their lenses for me to shoot and test I would be more than happy to oblige.

Cheers!

Sorry for the late reply guys............have been busy lately running errands.

Thanks younghee for the correction.........appreciate the updates.

It's nice to hear that they have managed to bring in the items much earlier than expected.
:)

The pricing looks reasonable..............will definitely give them a try............

Really like this! I just bought the E-PL2 a month back. Still learning how to make full of the excellent jpeg output of this camera. I'm not really getting it though. Need some advise here, hope you can help. Under normal shooting condition, what mode do you normally shoot in? eg. Vivid or ienhance? Do you - the saturation? Have been switching back and fore between these 2 mode, not really satisfied with the colour production. The saturation output for both these 2 modes tend to get a bit warm. What settings/mode do you recommend is the best when shooting jpeg? Thanks!

Thanks Resto for dropping by.......

Normally I shoot in 'Natural' mode unless on a very dull day then I'll put on 'Vivid' mode.

Learn to judge your color saturation/tone from your playback on the LCD screen or during shooting using live view....beside these color mode the WB/exposure/light conditions can also affect the color production......I usually play/explore with all these modes to try to reproduce and capture the shot with what your eyes see.........easy said than done ( shooting in jpeg is not easy at all )...........that's why many people take the easy way route and shoot in RAW .........knowing that they can always have the insurance of adjusting/tweeting the parameter later.......

To shoot well is to learn to see light by capturing the correct exposure for the shot by adjusting your exposure compensation dial......I seldom rely on my cam light metering.....only as a gauge.

Bear in mind that there are many types of lighting conditions: Intensity, Brightness, colors, direction, spread and also shadows and etc etc........

Shoot more often by exploring all the modes and features in your camera.....you may be pleasantly surprise what this little camera can produce.

Here's a shot for you my Oly friend, Cheers!
