about filters and strobes

hey guys...

i been reading about filter and strobes...
assuming that u need to use one or the other and NOT together
question will be.. under what circumstances does one work better then the other?

1) green water
2) blue water
3) clear as sky water

from what i have been reading about filters, it seems to me that filters work well when u have blue/green type water and with the sunlight/natural light being able to shin through the water. probably at 5m-10m depending.
if the natural light is not good at depth, a strobe will be able to light up the subject and enable you to take the subject at its natural color. but there is a possibility of the subject or the surrounding being over expose.

are my thinking correct?

For Macro… a strobe will always be needed. So I think filter is more for shallow, wide angle where even the the most powerful Strobe won't be able to expose the whole area. Theres even filters for Blue or Green waters nowadays. :D

Generally strobes work better for close focus wide angle or macro.... Filters work in shallow, clear waters with bright sunlight. there are different filters for different water color but usually i use the standard magic filter and adjust the raw file after that

okay...

about what i think also...

u refering to magic filters or those warm/cool filters ?

u refering to magic filters or those warm/cool filters ?

does it matter??

from what i read on magic filter.. they seem to point towards the direction mention here. and their test is done about at 40ft? ( 14m??)
hence also that is why i have my post... they seem to advocate to try to use natural light as much as possible and use filters as much as you can in those condition.

because magic filters are meant for the lenses and warm/cool filters are meant for the strobes ... ultimately, nthg beats good exposure

okay..

then let's just base it on lenses... actually that was what i meant in the first message.

Hi,

Generally , for every photo that its object is in strobe's length (i.e 8-10 feet for weak strobes and 15-20 feet for good strobes) you should use a strobe. A filter can correct colors but not bring back colors that are missing ( a strobe adds an external light source and therefore adds colors synthetically).

So you would use a filter for taking wider shots, scenery shots , walls and large reef rocks.

Also , most people that use filters are for budget issues. Its a very simple way to get good colors.

Good luck.

You can check with Oceanicfocus or Scubacam. Underwater gear is not cheap.
