I've also been wondering, since nikon uses sony's sensor and they have better noise control than sony, it boils down the the image processing that leads to the final iso result right?
So, is it possible that a firmware upgrade that will perhaps improve on the noise processing algorithm and improve on the in-body noise reduction, will fix the high noise in the 2xx/3xx series?

u are right, i switched from a Prosumer Canon SX1is (just 2 months) to a Sony A330. I have never like four thirds SLR, if i have to pay that kind of money which is actually more than the price of a DSLR, i rather get a proper DSLR with a nice Viewfinder! Isn't Viewfinder the reason why DSLR is a better choice? hmmm.........sorry if i offended four third people, i rather use a prosumer than a four thirds, a viewfinder is better in terms of capturing Non-still objects. (IMHO, don't flame me)

Ok back to the topic, the high ISO performance seems better than the lower range Alphas, i just played with my friend's Canon 40D, we both shoot at our neighbour's kids bday party and he is using ISO1600 but i can't do it, noise is too obvious :( wonder why can't Sony just improve in the ISO performance, his 40D max is iso3200 and still usable, the A330 is 3200, what's the use of including 3200 when the usable range is only iso800? I am not exceptionally happy with that, but well i paid less than $1k so dun expect that much, regret not getting a 500D or A500 now :(

Why bother so much about noise when there are softwares in the market to address that. I don't think Canon users will not use these softwares too. It's more important to capture the moment and get a noiser picture than to get a so-so picture with low noise. Afterall, if you were to print the picture in normal 4R or 8R, the noise is not really that unbearable.

hmm......i will try out then, i still quite new, dun really know how to do image processing except from using the Sony s/w to change brightness etc. Havent try 4R and 8R prints, if it's really not visible the i guess it's fine but nowadays most people show photos digitally, e.g. 42" LCD TV, the noise should be quite visible when doing that, correct me if i am wrong.

To be fair, the lower end DSLRs that are targeted at PnS converts ought to have much better noise control. After all, they can't be expected to know about noise reduction... they're using DSLRs for the better image quality, faster focusing speeds and greater flexibility.

In that respect I think the A550 is a step in the right direction... I guess it will filter down to all cameras by next Spring... if the firmware can be used to adjust the way the processor handles noise, I think we'll see it by end of the year... though I doubt it...

BTW, Dearchivism, nice shots although I don't quite like the white balance...

actually, i am still wondering why sony still uses the ccd sensors. is it that much cheaper over cmos? i would think the current generation of cmos production is pretty advanced and streamlined for mass production to make it just as cheap as ccd already.

well, the 5xx series are the first cmos to roll out..
edit: for entry level

A700 is already using cmos, so are the a900 and a850, so technically its the 4th sony dslr to roll out cmos.

but for the entry level department, yes its the first.

I cannot remember now but there are inherent advantages for using CCD. CMOS also has its advantages... can't remember where I read it now... it really is quite a number of years back... CMOS has of course advanced tremendously and caught up with CCD but there was one advantage of that CCD had... not sure if it's price due to mature architecture or having lots of plants around doing CCD sensors or something like that...

Somehow i still feel that the colours of pictures taken with my A350 is richer than my A850.. But overall, the pros of CMOS outweighs the CCD.

Yes I guess so but really you could always push up the saturation a notch if you like the colours richer...

Yea that's what i'm doing right now.. But as you know, in some situations, this setting may cause the photo to be abit yellowish, and that sucks haha.

That's white balance... you've got to change it or use custom white balance.

AR is it? haha note taken.. thanks bro

Huh? What's AR? White Balance... is well white balance... basically telling your camera what the white should be like in your environment based on the ambient lighting...

my AR is verbally AR.. no meaning to it, just a sound. Sorry if you misread it for something else bro ;)
