I register online and never need to bring the receipt for warranty service. Not sure how things are going for those not registering online.

Not just Sony's service centre.

Last time I went to service my Nokia phone, they only base on the warranty card. I don't understand where he got the idea that we need to show receipt. :dunno:

Anyway I think this pricing controlling scheme or whatsoever is really stupid. Just to make life harder for those who hate to use phone like me.

Same here... Though, as long as I can still get good deal, I don't really care...

Actually my main concern is esp for buying 2nd lenses/cameras where many people say left how more months warranty etc.

If receipt is not needed, then a product's warranty can last as long as the actual product cycle which can be many many years.

So is Sony going to service all the parts for free even though they know that product might be out of "warranty" ? Then the 1year warranty period dictated by them is useless IMO.

if i remember correctly, the shop will update Sony on the particular product ref number that was bought from the store. suffice to say, warranty card is actually not needed, as the person can just check up on the system to see when the product was purchased.

They will check your body/lense serial no. and they will have data about your body/lense to see if there are still warranty left. If not, then they will ask you to pay. They not stupid to service us for free :bsmilie:. Usually when we are the 2ndhand owner, we need to have their online registration printed out to us from the 1st hand owner. Using that we can have proof.

If we buy from a shop and the shop didnt give us any receipt, then the shop owner is wrong as he just escaped GST. Meaning he only ask you to pay or he trick you by paying more or less excluding GST. Receipt is more for accntant/gov to trackdown those shops for GST. Every device should be include GST when selling to you. Not sure if you recieve any device which does not include GST is legal?:dunno:

Ok, this makes sense.

However, one of the shops actually told me not to register warranty until I encounter problem....so I guess they do not update Sony on the sale of that item? Maybe loophole somewhere...;)

Or they might trick you. after 7 days or 15 days not registering, your product will consider not valid for warranty. why not try on Sony cheap item 1st like MP3..then see if anything happen. If still can use it, then try it on Alpha...:bsmilie:

warranty registraion is to link the product the shop updated sony about with the person who bought it. so its easier on sony's end on admin purposes. for the 7 days dont-register-got-problem-come-back-to-shop thing. this one is more on shop policy liao. perhaps they only update sony after 7 days? then within 7 days product got problem should go back to shop for replacement perhaps.

if that is the case, you bought from a underhanded shop bro. from what i deal with CP, they will tell me straight if this product i am buying has warranty or not.

also i have a few lenses that are unregistered, but sony still services them for free because its still under warranty.

Nope, You can wait. Warranty starts when you register it. I waited a year before registering my A700 (to get it cleaned), and so it had a full 15 months warranty when I resold it.

Ah...this is the best part...

So quite a good deal actually that we do not need to produce receipts then.

Now we all know what to do...

I think it is good that some of the seniors here are willing to explain the reason for not posting Sony prices online. It certainly helps more than to go "What have you done!? Pls remove it ASAP."

instead of either turning on the light bulb (posting shop name + price), or turning off the light bulb (not posting at all)
why not we dim the light bulb? Since most of us are familiar with retailers that carry sony lenses
Eg.
RRP (recommended retail price) SP (Street price) RP (Resale price)

Sony Price List
Lenses (Prime)
SAL30F28 RRP$XXX | SP $XXX | RP$XXX

Could be that if you do not register, they go by the date stock was shipped to the shop. But if you register using the card, your registration date overrides the stock date.

Just for sharing, I have bot my A350K and Flash from one of the local shops. When I checked online, I realised that the shop registered the warranty for me, on the day I bot. Perhaps, this is how Sony knows. Again, I may be generalising.

If I planned to get the A850, should I go to any Sony shop or Retail shop?

$300+ can get me extra batt n memory card. :o

VC also need to get. For flash, can use the old 5600, right?

IMO, go shop better. You can get a better quality memory card from SL than get it from Sony shop (they should be giving you Sony's brand memory card). Try sign up the free class by SDW after you registered the A850 online, then after the lesson, they should give you a discount coupon, I think you can use it to buy extra batt.

VC? You mean the grip? You may not need it.

If the flash can be used on existing Alpha DSLR, it should work with it also.

registration date overrides stock date..but does it "override" the receipt date?

so as long as you register online... will Sony still need to see the receipt when you bring it down for servicing? Isn't there a need to indicate date of purchase when you register online? Must that date match with the date on receipt? :bsmilie:

:bsmilie: i still got 1 or 2 unregistered stuff..too lazy to register them online..

So how do we show the date of purchase to ensure the product is still under warranty?

You either register online and the date is logged into the system or you submit the warranty card which requires to you to fill in the date of purchase. At SONY side, the date will also be logged into the system. In each case, they will know the warranty date.
