A850 Street Price...

1. Sony resellers signed an agreement to sell at RRP, and not lower. Therefore selling at a discount can get the shop into trouble (Cathay received stocks of the 70-300G 2 weeks after the others because of a street price posted on CS seen by Sony).

2. When the shops send you the e-quote, it specifically states that it is confidential and you should not share it. To then immediately post it on a forum says a lot about character.

3. In CS, there's an "Edit" button. Please use it. :)
TS said he called them up. no references to emails or anything stating confidentiality.
If sony wants to, they can call the shops up too and receive the same quote. so what's the difference?

The cathay incident, i think, is someone who got a special discount due to connections to them, then proceeded to post the personal discounted price here.
That, i feel is a different case altogether and shouldnt be mixed up with somebody doing his homework researching prices.

lastly, RRP means Recommended Retail Price, which is supposed to be literally what it reads.
so if they needed a fixed price, they should put it nett price instead and not be bothered about 'recommending' a price.

of course one could debate that they wish for the RRP to be the lowest price offered, but that would also indirectly mean that they wouldnt care if shops sell their cameras at ripoff prices to tourists. would they be wanting this situation on their hands?

*shrug*

Sony is the principle of Alpha DSLR. If the price got from shops are lower than SSC, then that would imply a discount has been given. It is unlikely he is being ripped off from shops. If he wants more discount, just use the lowest price he found and neg with the shop he likes.

If Sony really impose such stupid agreement with retailers to only sell at RRP, now I know why some shops prefer not to sell Sony products.

For all who doesn't know, even the pricing from big stores like Courts/Best Denki/HN are "negotiable" and can be lower than RRP.

Of course, now I really wondering does Sony knows the meaning of RRP.

How Sony handle its distribution and channel are really not much we can say about. What we learned to deal, is to "work around" the situation.

I think, many of us here would prefer to support our local shops, since they are trying to provide a good deal to us. Don't make things difficult for them.

QFT

thats how sony works. unfortunately. We either deal with it, or leave it altogether.

And don't forget, Sony has their own stores, Sony Style.

Waho...those are good prices...thanks..hope to own a @850 soon.

yup, very attractive. thanks to TS for doing the research:thumbsup:

I'm not sure about sony's stand in this, but I personally dont think it's an issue.
They can impose a RRP but i dont think they can fix the prices nor prevent shops from doing parallel imports of their product.
The worst that can happen will be removal of the 'preferred dealer' status, which i think shops which does parallel imports dont bother with anyway.

Parallel imported stuff not supported by local SONY warranty... that's the difference. I think SONY tracks all the registration numbers in each market...

I personally don't see it as an issue posting prices, but if it does make life more difficult for the shops, then we can still circulate prices via PM lor... it's just an accessibility issue... SONY can always find out, it doesn't matter...

I think SONY has ever released a press statement regarding their stringent control of prices - to protect their dealers so that they would not undercut one another's profit to such an extent that it's not very worth selling SONY products. Also to protect the image and branding of SONY... usually more expensive is perceived as better made...

I think that's also the reason why Nike has stopped retail shops in Queensway Shopping Centre from giving huge discounts over the RRP. And the penalty I understand is sometimes not having access to the latest models... as a result, I think the general prices of Nike sneakers have gone up somewhat and are closer to the RRP in the shopping centres... I remember that a pair of brand new models like the early Nike Air Zoom Max would cost like S$289 in a shopping centre but you could always get it for like $199 at Queensway... I think since then, this has ceased to exist... That's what I heard cos all the shops are worried that they will have no opportunity to get stock for new hot models which can boost their earnings substantially when the price is still high and the demand is hot for these...

So I guess with the anecdote, it might also apply to SONY products as Rashkae pointed out... the 70-200 f/2.8 is in demand, and not having stocks would mean that the shop is deprived of earning on these products... and being premium products, I think the profit margin is much higher. Can be quite painful for a shop if every round of stock inventoring, you're marginalised by the manufacturer... and it's not like the SONY market is very small or insignificant...

Hi guys, i had changed the shops' name to make them not so obvious and still can share the info (more info added). Hope tiz help and sorry for the commotion caused.

Thks everyone, i managed to buy the A850 today from 1 of them (special thks to newkidontheblk for sharing his purchase, got mine there too).

Just a point for thought.

For warranty purpose, do we need to produce the receipt in order to verify the validity of the product?

If yes, then these shops will be slapping themselves on their faces as the receipts show the discounted price.

If no, then how to show proof to Sony that we bought from their "reputable dealer" ?

Is based on warranty card.

I register online and never need to bring the receipt for warranty service. Not sure how things are going for those not registering online.

Anyway I think this pricing controlling scheme or whatsoever is really stupid. Just to make life harder for those who hate to use phone like me.
