a7sii review

Used the a7sii today for a short project. It's a great cam and step up from its predecessor. There are so many things i like about it.

Background - I come from a photography and digital imaging background - No concrete experience in video and certainly not technically incline. - Previous cameras i have used for video: a7s, a7r, FS7, Sony handycam

Likes about a7s2 - Bright LCD viewfinder that allowed me to focus even under direct hot sunlight
- 4K is nice and sharp. I did not go beyond 29 mins limit but was shooting randomly around 40 minutes or so. Camera was hot but did not shut down like the earlier a7 series i used. But this is non-conclusive.
- Handgrip was good. Improved over the previous one (but read the quirks)
- Picture quality is good. Shutter sound is fantastic.
- Camera feels very robust

I wouldn't say that the camera has its cons but areas that can be improved.

Quirks - Camera goes into a super35 mode when you switch to 100 fps
- When shooting at 100 fps, files are still in mpeg and not differentiated w the 4K files. Hard to find your files
- Those of us who are used to draining a7s batteries are probably used to this complain.
- Movie button cannot be customised? (I couldn't find it).
- The default colors cannot be customised (At least i haven't found out how).
- the weight is heavier than the predecessor. Need to grip it firmer. Unsupported shakes are more apparent even with stabiliser.
- 5 axis stabiliser is not a cure for all. A tripod is.

Buy or not Buy?
- Like what some online reviewers have said: If you are looking to own one video-hybrid camera, this is probably a good one to get.
- Even if you have the a7s, you will find some significant difference. Will see if i can share some footage and pictures later.

Looking forward to your sample pictures :)

Can elaborate more what significant difference compared to its predecessor? How about IQ?

Thanks for your review

I think in terms of low ISO for filming, this guy is around the same as the previous one. The amazing thing about the original video for a7s at ISO 100 is already amazing and can lit up a dark night.

But it is not entirely grain free. I think need to balance and find the optimum ISO for it.

The image from a7s2 in my room under fluorescent at night turned out to be grainy. I didn't keep the shot to share. Perhaps it was something i did. (I was using the FE 55 F1.8). Again, my tests are non scientific.

In term of Image, i think it is doing wonders compared to the earlier series. It is close to the 2013 D800 or slightly better. The noise in the dark area is nice. Not muddy. I shot in compressed jpeg and didn't have time to test the raw yet.

This is a sample of what i took. Exposure is straight on. Image is really sharp. Makes me pin for a a7rII for the 42 MP. I think it will even do better!

Hahaha bro, wait no more bcos you already bought ... :bsmilie:

I think my next purchase will probably be a GX8 followed by a D750 ...

This is a sample video I did.

Filmed with permission

Sony a7sii
FE 24-240 mm
Voigtlander 50mm F1.1
PP0 (no LUT) applied

What i liked:
- I realised i am a pixel peeper when i get to video too. Previously i liked the uncompressed file from a7s to Shogun. However 2 - 3 hours of recording resulted in close to 1 TB of file! With the new a7sii, i get the same quality without the fear of dropping the shogun or carrying extra weight. The new LCD on the a7sii was sharp enough to use under bright sunlight.
- 4K downscaled to 1080p allowed me to crop and zoom in and having more free play. Hurray!

However:
- with the 24-240, the over sharpness is very 'digital', the colors are much 'Sony' (Strong red, blue and green). (I need to try PP8/ PP9 soon!)
