You could go to the Sony store at Wisma Atria and try out their display model. That's partly what they're there for.

I don't have the VG and don't plan to get one. Frame rate is already more than I need, ergonomics are superb, and battery life is decent enough for my purposes.

Yeah that's my dilemma right now lolz. I saw some YouTube of A77 + VG and the.LCD don't rotate so its kinda weird when you changing setting everything is sideways lolz.

confirm the LCD doesn't rotate as im usin it wif vg nw...
hope the new firmware will correct tis also

Nope... the LCD display does not rotate with VG on firmware 1.04 (pre-released version).

A few more observations on the new firmware . . .

Gotta agree with bro albertri's observation about ISO 800--no noticeable change in noise. It's still a mixed bag, seeming to be better or worse from one frame to the next, depending on ambient light and color. BUT the detail smearing is gone, which makes for a net improvement in IQ.

Without the detail smearing, most anything shot at ISO 200 either comes out fairly clean or with noise that can easily be cleaned up in PP with no more than minimal loss of detail. Even ISO 400 is decent-looking at 50% magnification. It's easy to be hypercritical when pixel-peeping; but if one puts things in perspective, IQ is pretty good. This many megapixels on a a crop sensor extrapolates to around 56mp on FF, something we have yet to see.

SPOT AF, which I complained about in another thread, is much improved in 1.04. Peaking is still more accurate, but you have to pixel-peep to notice the difference. AF seems faster as well. With my Minolta 200mm f/2.8 HS APO, it's almost instant.

AND I can confirm that the new firmware does correct distortion and CA on the CZA 16-80mm. I shot a granite bench with the top of the back at the edge of the frame at 16mm at close range. Looked almost like a damn half moon in the viewfinder, but 1.04 bent that granite into a perfect straight line! ;) The lens looks a $hitload better in the corners at 16-20mm, too, with the CA gone.

I hope that Sony will eventually tell us what other lens profiles they added. I already know two that they didn't . . . ;p

Hey bro what's your settings?

Saw the sample photos from DPreview and setting was NR- Normal, Creative Mode - Standard +1 Contrast 0 Saturation 0 Sharpness?

I have done a sample from ISO 400, 800, 1600, 3200, 6400 , 12000 and 16000 and I am happy up to 6400 performance and 12K and 16K is total garbage on my point. Here's the link at Photobucket with actual file sizes I wont post the photos here as ther are pretty huge

Let's see . . . off the top of my head:

Format: JPEG 24M EF, RAW on occasion
SS: OFF at all times
DRO: OFF for close-up, Lvl 4 for daylight landscape.
HDR: Are you kidding?
Long Exp NR: OFF
High ISO NR: Low
Creative: VIVID, contrast 0, saturation 0, sharpness +2 (+3 causes artifacts, not increased noise.)
Metering: SPOT 100%, multi segment and center weight usually overexpose.
Flash Comp: Always on the negative side (assigned to AEL button), exact level depending on subject.
Peaking level: HIGH
Peaking color: Varies (So why, dammit, didn't Sony let this be assignable to one of the buttons?)

+PP w/LR 3.5, CR 6.5, CS5

Anything I missed?

lols look slike you listed all major settings =) try copying DPreview NR and creative setting was surprise of the improvement... I think my combi of NR - Low and Creative = Vivid Sharpness +3 was causing to exhibit more noise =(

Sharpness +3 will give you a Georges Seurat painting instead of a photograph! ;p

yeah I used +3 when I was shooting at FW1.03 and to later FW1.04 but with the recent discovery I might stay at the DPReview settings. This is much safer for me specially for my travels =)

Sir when you have time could you do your test also using DPReview settings and see based on your past experience if indeed there's improvement? So far based on my sample shots looks like I will eat my words that there are no noticeable changes in noise control =) This time I like to be wrong than right. =)

I'm sure you've noticed by now--maybe even mentioned it in one of your earlier posts--that the amount of noise can vary depending on the color and amount of light on the subject. As I don't have access to whatever it was that the DPReview folks shot in their test shots, I can't effectively replicate their test conditions.

Hmmmm . . . was that a good enough excuse to cover my laziness? ;)

The settings I posted above were arrived at after I installed 1.04 and spent a few afternoons in less than ideal conditions (between downpours) trying various lenses at various combinations of settings. As an aside, I can confirm that the a77 is indeed very water-resistant! ;p

lolz not at all bro =) I just want to ensure that what i am seeing is not my imaginations as I can test FW 1.03 already no point of comparission just want someone to agree with I guess lolz.

wow what lens did you used bro? I know the A77 is weather sealed but I dont know any Sony lenses that's equally have the same weather proofing...

70300G, 70400G, and Minolta 200mm f/2.8 HS APO (both with and without SAL14TC). I doubt that any of these lenses (except maybe the Minolta) could handle a steady downpour (nor would I;p), but moving about in drizzle didn't seem to have any negative residual effects.

You must put those lenses in dry cab asap to ensure any waters that may accidentally slip in would dry up. I am a bit braver now also but not as brave as you.... I'm scared that the water may penetrate the lens. But very light drizzle I'm ok :-) just wipe dry any waters.

Yup, all of the above. I also carry a microfiber sport towel as well as Zeiss wipes in my bag.

I've read in more than one place that Sony actually does build some sort of protection into their G lenses, but that they don't use it as a marketing tool. And for people who do shoot in driving rain, rain covers are a helluva lot cheaper than new lenses.

yeah wondering why thy built A77 weather sealed an yet they dont have any lenses that is weather sealed??? kinda make me thinks what's the point of having such body when your lens isn't lolz. So the rumors might be true that some of Sony's lens do have some weather seal...

....You never heard of the 16-50 f/2.8?

nope bro never seen either :P

It is the lens that was with all A77 test units, etc. It's the kit lens for the A77. It's officially weather sealed. It was talked about to death in all the leaks, every review, etc. It was on the test units at the SG Alpha users gathering, etc...
