Does that mean cmos is better than ccd in noise control?

Do you mean to ask whether CMOS is fundamentally or structurally better than CCD in terms of noise control?
Or do you mean for this round the developers of CMOS is one step ahead of CCD developers in noise control? Then we cannot be sure how CCD will perform if all the resources were put to developing better CCD noise control technology.

I don't know which one is fundamentally better in terms of noise to signal ratio but I do know that Sony is making a lot more CMOS sensors for its high end dSLRs. I can already see an A700 replacement with an even better CMOS chip inside to be released soon before the World Cup. Oh shall I wait longer or shall I get the a550 now? This is so tormenting.

I am not sure but it seems the a700 replacement is to be announced by 1st quarter 2010, before pma i think. So that stock should arrive way before world cup in june.

not bad !! with abit of reduction via softwares.. i guess it will be perfect.

love  it! event at iso 12800 its still more than usable for 4r 8r prints imo... they managed to somehow prevent major chroma artefacts and the noise from these cams have a more grainy pleasant look imo :)
need add an IR af illuminator and some weather sealing and it would be the perfect cam :bsmilie:

woah. tempting :D
im loviing sony more and more

Yes, I can't imagine how A7xx and A9xx is going to perform.

If having the same noise control, those 2 cameras will be hot like hell.

Yup and twice the poison in a very short time .....:)

Hehe, ok lah, have been preparing for these 2 gems arrival...

So the moment they arrived, just swoop them up lor...

This is my test shows for the A500. Pictures are taken in jpeg (shouldve taken them in RAW) and resized in photoshop. I wasnt sure what settings to use, to be honest, so i set a fixed aperture in A-priority mode and just take the pictures. Hope its clear enough to give a rough gauge of the noise control.

i just realised that there's a "High ISO Noise reduction" setting in A500. It can toggle between normal and high. I set it to normal...

I probably should have set it to High to see the effects of this noise reduction setting at high ISO...

Haha yeah, do you guys think i should get a 70-300G or a Beercan to go with my A500?

See your budget lor haha. If u have the dough, go for the G lens lor. If not, beercan is a pretty good buy too. You can even consider the Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 APO DG Macro (don't shoot me - mine outperformed my beercan wor) which retails for only $300+. Nobody mentions this lens much but it gives u a good range + 1:2 macro capability from ~1m away. Plus its really light and compact.

WOW!!! u sure it out perform the beercan? so tempting, i always thought Fixed Aperture is the way to go, i am surprise the Sigma can outperform a Fixed A lens

 mo way! is it SONY? that 1600ISO is like 400ISO on my A350!

still havent seen any RAW iso comparisons without the in body NR.
can the raw files be processed by lightroom yet?

Very usable high iso...

I took test shots and was surprised too. Somehow the beercan is much more prone to CA. Not sure if its just an APS-C thing.

yes beercan is more prone to CA but it's sharper though even when used @ F4. still one of the gems out there.
