Best to read up as much as u can on both cameras. There are many reviews on the A550 and I believe just as many on Canon 50D. Then again, these are reviewers opinion. Take some shots on both cameras and see the difference. Play with the user interface and hold the cameras in your hand.
Do look up on review of lenses as well on performance and range/types available.
