A3 printer

Hi Pureflow,

Actually my friends and I tested the Epson and HP alternative before settling for Canon. The Epson 2100 apparantly requires swapping of the matte and glossy black inks for use on different media. This means that we have to flush the system before installing the other black. Given that our work alternates between glossy and matte output, this was not a viable option at all. In addition, we needed to produce high quality A3 proofs daily, and the Epson 2100 was way too slow. The Canon suited our needs much better in this case.

Plus, Lyson makes small gamut inks for both Epson and Canon, and so we're pretty pleased with our Canon S9000 printers. In fact, he's considering to upgrade to the i9950 with 8 inks. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

would be able to share my opinion of the S9000 printer tomorrow :)

Print quality not bad. Have printed on matte paper and the printouts look great :)

Hi Pureflow,

You've a dedicated server for ripping? Hmmm.... now I'm jealous! :)

Anyway, heard good comments about the EPS4000. Just that it's really a monster in size, or else it'll be good for churning out prints commercially. You should go get one on your desk to accompany that print server of yours! :bsmilie:

Mpenza: Glad you like the S9000. My friend sends his regards!

Thanks Neo. Had a good chat with your friend just now too :) It was nice meeting him :)

OT: would you know where I could get the cartridges cheap? PK Computer is selling at $16.90 per color.

S9000 is using the same cartridge as S9100?

I got my BCI-6xx from S$14-$15 each. Think Challenger is about $15, and there's one shop in 5th floor of Funan IT Mall selling $14.50, forgotten the name, it's the shop that sell a lot of Symantec Software and games.

My current "dream" printer... :D

Epson 4000

that's why I have a rip server to locate the printer 10 meters from my table.

pureflow,

do you mean you have print server instead of a rip server? otherwise i would be very interested about color separating(ripping) CcYMmk on epson inkjets and your workflow....

regards..

I am also looking for an A3 printer to print wedding photos, so I need the prints to LAST for like years. I am not a heavy duty user, in fact I am a TOTAL amateur. Just need a A3 printer that can print nice photos that LAST.

I have narrowed my choices to

1) HP 9600 series (around $700)
Pro: prints supposed can last for like 73 years...
cons: err... how come no one mentioned this printer in this thread???

2) Canon i9100 (around $700)
Pros: multiple ink cartridges, recommended by other people
Cons: can the prints last?

3) Epson 1290 (around $700)
Pros: ??
Cons: reliability issues??

4) Epson 2100 (1k+??)
Pros: ??
Cons: super expensive compared to the others...

So any recommendations?

the old list price was $14.90. The new list price is now $16.90 as of March/April :( Fortunately i bought a spare set at $14.90

South Asia is selling for $16.10. AFAIK all the Funan shops have changed their prices, please let me know if any are selling at old prices....

The 1290 costs around $800, not $700. I got mine for $755 about 3 months ago. Performance is just as good as my old 1270. My 1270 does have clogging and banding problems. The 1290 is probably too new to have these problems. I've used 3 sets of ink on the 1290 so far. Very good prints when coupled with the heavyweight matte paper. Some of the prints from the old 1270 are more than a year old and no signs of fading. Of course, you have to be sensible and handle them properly.

Ya, I have heard of many clogging stories from my friends with epson printers... maybe they need extra care and maintenance...

How about canon's i9950? saw it on their website but did not see it in Funan today. It seems that they improved their achival quality with this model. dunno how much though.

1. For those printers you all mentioned, epson 2100, canon ones, HP 7xxx ones... Which ones print well on standard photocopy paper like "Double A premium 80gsm A4 paper"?

2. Does Ultrachrome ink work well with such photocopy printer or only with the epson photo paper?

pureflow,

are you telling me that epson 2100 needs to be on permanently??? else it will clog?? before you left it on (2feb 2003), did you have any problems?

haha.. i bought my 2100 on 4th feb... it only arrive then.. I had a 600 -> 1520 -> 1290 -> 2100. I always left the 600 and 1520 off. then it always clog.. but when I had the 1290 and 2100. I always left it on.. 1290 clog less than 3 times in 6 months.. 2100.... not that I can remember since I got it.

I had an Epson 790 (A4) which tends to clog too. I have to use up 3-5 cleaning cycles to unclog it. The prints were excellant but the clogging puts me off and wastes ink. From what I have seen, most Epsons will clog.

I have since bought a Canon... :dunno:

Hi.
Thanks for all the valuable replies.
Finally bought a Canon i9100.

Have a question. If the photo paper is old (more than 3 months), will the printed result be kind of yellowish?

I'm very green in printing photos, please enlighten me.

Thanks.

you bought the i9100??? how much?

I am thinking of buying an A3 printer but I am waiting for the i9950 to be released. Someone say it will be released in May.
