I think going wide angle is an expensive proposition with DSLR, since we are not talking full frame here. To get anything better than A1's '28mm', you need a lens wider than 17mm, which you don't already have and afaik are quite costly.
Of course the tele side is a big plus, but that is assuming you can use your current lens on the DSLR, (and that DSLR has yet to be announced)
How does the situation looks like if you don't have any lens/flash that you can use on the DSLR that you are looking at? Does the cost compared to an A1 still make sense?
About the A1 is an exception, yes it is, the only cameras in its league now would be the F828 from Sony. What I am trying to say that don't discount the A1 just because you can't change lens. In most circumstances the A1's lens will be able to do the job sufficiently well. There are certainly drawbacks on the camera and it would boil down to whether those limitation are critical for you.
Agree with your analysis.... currently of course I am waiting for Minolta DSLR... I have a 17-35, 24-135 and 100-400mm lenses.... so that pretty much covers most of the focal range that I use. Even given a worse case scenario of a 1.5x crop factor, I'll get about 25mm on the wide end which would be pretty usable. I'm "surviving" on 24mm most of the time.... only take out the 17-35mm when I really need it... so where that is concerned, I think for DSLR, it would be ok. But the issue is if and when the DSLR would be launched...
Actually I read the in-depth review of the A1 last night (dpreview.com) and am already falling in love with it. Plus your comments, I'm just waiting for the DLSR to be announced only.... if it's too costly (like >$2000), then maybe I'll settle for a A1 later in the year when the cost would have fallen and perhaps some firmware upgrade (for the noisy pics) has been made... no reviews out yet on the SONY F828 either nor other new 5MP cameras like the Fuji S7000 (which seems not very good from the number of 2nd hand sales)
Cheers!
