Yah ! the price tag on this rare cowry is US$250 ! anyway after taking this shot, I took the shell to deeper depth and hide it !.

Donno exactly why it's rare. Low 'production' rate? For collectors of seashells, cowrie shells out there, it's hard to find so if one comes on the market, people pay good $ for the chance to own one.
The idea of hiding it (for what it's worth) is to make it harder for divers who will not think twice about fishing it out of the sea for USD200 +++. Do not really think it works cause they do move about ...

Hey, comparing this http://www.divegallery.com/cowry_carnelian.htm
with this http://www.george-shells.com/seashells.html (1st pic), it appears that yours a Canelian Cowry and not the Golden Cowry. They sure look alike and 1f you ask me, the canelan looks ncer! :bsmilie:

yup, this is not golden cowry, some other pics of the Lyncina Aurantium here

http://www.gastropods.com/8/Shell_478.html

It has been a prized collection amongst shell collectors, used to be rare and expensive. There have been more sightings in the recent years

Oh.. so the 'worm' upgraded his home frm a Canelian to a Golden eh...
