A quick test on the D60 + 16-85VR

From the picture you shown, the sharpness of this lens at f8 is really disappointing, I think 18-70mm is still sharper. Please correct if I'm wrong.

probably becos i din use MUA (not sure it has), and the tripod i was using is the manfrotto 7-series travel tripod. not exactly top-drawer stuff. i'm pretty sure if i use a sturdier tripod, the camera shake will go away.

I second that:
Even with VR2 18-70mm is much sharper and IIRC at 70mm is f4.5 only.

Looks like shake but since it tripod mounted, I would not expect it to be this bad. Might it be due to the image engine? For the same price as D40X and with new features, I fear that the image might not be as good as D40X. I just hope this is not the case.

Maybe it might be a better idea to test the D60 and the 16-85VR separately because now we don't know if it's the lens that's not good or is it just the body. ;p

perhaps u can take a look over here.

the websites are in Jap. but can scroll down to the pics with bunny to compare.

So much for EXPEED... Looks like D40X image looks more solid and less noisy.. :think: It seems like the exposure are slightly different, so may be hard to tell also.

The VR version of the 18-55 does look better at the corners though.. :thumbsup:

hmm... if like that hor, D40x + 18-55mm VR may be a better deal. :think:

..used to have D40 and 18-70mm. i wanted to get the 16-85mm and D60 combo badly. i just can't believe they are no better than D40x and 18-70mm. maybe i should go down to the shop and try them myself..

skinny tripod, tiny ballhead... bad idea.

i'm pretty sure its a case of PLBV and not the lens. tho i will appreciate if someone can show better samples. :embrass:

At least you put in the effort to give us a review. :) :thumbsup:

The colours look richer on the D60...

For the sceneries? I think they're taken in different season with different ligthing so not a good comparison. At least I would expect the studio shots to be more controlled. In these instances the D40X gave a nicer colour.

Best is still to have them side by side for comparison.

I looked again... ya, D40X has a nicer colour. I think I mixed up the two pictures just now.

But then again... if you scrutinize the two bunny pics carefully, the shadows drop differently, so I guess this is not really a good comparison either. :nono:

but i notice that it was taken on the same spot but on different time/season. the shot by d40x was taken around spring while d60 was at fall. looks to me that d60 used filters to make the colors lively. maybe someone can give a side by side/simultaneous shot at same settings (fl, iso and all) then that can show the difference

Some reviews of D60... 4 Star rating

ePhotozine reviews the Nikon D60 and writes;
“ISO1600 is where the magic of the new processor shines. There’s no point in fudging it and saying that no noise is evident. It is, but the amount for this kind of ISO rating is minimal. Pinkish tones have started to appear in dark areas, but plenty of detail is still available on the petals and they’re all still a decent colour.”

LetsGoDigital reviews the Nikon D60 and writes;
“The straightforward operation and the well thought-out structure of the menu make the Nikon D60 a very pleasant entry-level model with every DSLR-functionality but with the ease of use of a compact camera.”

Pocket-Lint reviews the Nikon D60 and writes;
“Image noise can be a problem at higher ISOs, at ISO 800 and above sadly the same is true here even with noise reduction on and despite Nikon’s EXPEED engine strutting its stuff, a processor that works so well on the D3 and D300, the application here is less successful in terms of noise control.”

Bloomberg reviews the Nikon D60 and writes;
“Based on my informal tests, the D60 was quite capable and fun to use. It powered up within 0.2 second and was capable of shooting as fast as 3 frames per second in manual and shutter- priority modes. ”

Some reviews of D60... 4 Star rating
No doubt the D60 is a good camera. The question is how it fare beside the D40X. They are selling at the same price with the 18-55VR. My first impression is that the images doesn't look as good as D40X's for the same ISO. The ephotozine reviews reveals that the quality is about the same.. So it may be a batch problem.. :dunno: maybe they are just as good..

I'm interested to find out too, am waiting for dpreview to do a review on it. From a glance, seems like the D40x produces better images on higher ISOs...
