Not a problem shooting with expired film. In fact, there's a market for expired film. When most people talk about expired film, they usually mean that the film is expired for maybe at least a couple of years and it has to be well stored. The last thing you want is to load in a fungus filled roll. The differences you get really varies; some no effect, some got slight change in colour etc. I think one of the appeal is also the uncertainty of what you get.
basically all film have a shelf life for reproducing optimum quality, an expired film may have fog, faded, or off color.
Yes, you able to push the film, depend on what film are you using, some films are not recommended for pushing, some films able to plus up to three stops, do note when you plus a roll of film, you are underexposed it and over developing it to get back the exposure, so you have to apply the same ISO thru out the entire roll, and tell the lab to push process it by how many stops.
Pushing the film will increase the contrast of the film and make the film very grainy, similar like you shoot underexposed on digital and bring up the exposure in photoshop.
and also pushing the film are cost more than normal processing charge.

Haha...I guess the unpredictability is part of the fun. You won't want to use expired film for any serious or paid jobs.
Colour film I won't recommend expired, but then if you are scanning it then it may not be that big a problem because any colour cast and loss of contrast can be corrected somewhat.
For b/w film, assuming they are properly stored (in a fridge, not dry box) can last pretty long. Check this old thread of mine from a once popular photography forum:

2 stops is probably the sweet spot for push processing, anything beyond, it gets too grainy and contrasty to be useful.
