A new D90 or used D80??

Why? Not like the AF-D's work best on FX or Don't work on DX.

Hahaha :bsmilie: He is living in yesterday year mah:bsmilie: Just kidding

Hello Guys, thanks for the excellent feedbacks. I think I had sponsored Nikon's R&D :bsmilie: after investing in D1 in 2000, D70, then D70s and ended up selling them at rock bottom prices. Its like loosing money every year.

I happen to collect all the prime lenses from 17mm, 20mm, 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, 90mm, 105mm, 135mm, 180mm, mostly Nikkor. Sadly, D200 and D70s did not match my expectations in terms of picture quality. I dont need even 2.5 fps. I dont need fast AF.

Was looking at D80 sometime ago. Then last month was offered a D80. But suddenly D90 came into the picture. Wonder will I have to sell it away next year, AGAIN?:dunno:

If D200 did not meet your expectation, then possibly D80 or D90 might still not be able to meet them too.

Anyway, what is your expectation?

Cheers

I have been a film user for many years. :)

F90x. F4 and F3HP still serves me well.

But digital is here.

but how abt the medium format digital backs?

If you have been shooting film all this while, I can see why you are not satisfied with D200.

Maybe you should go try D300/D90, take some pics and see if you can live with the dynamic range, and resolution. They have the same sensors. If you are still not sure if the D300/D90 is good enough, you could just wait awhile. D700 is already hitting below 3.5k, maybe in a years time it could be well below the 2K mark. D700/D3 has much better contrast and dynamic range. In the mean time, you can still enjoy clicking away with film.

I totally agree.. Its all depends on you .. But from my opinion .. If you are serious .. get a D700 than a D300 .. If you would choose a D300 .. might as well stick to D90.. Just my 2cents view..

Peace..

D90 has 95% viewfinder coverage.
D700 has 95% viewfinder coverage.
D300 has 100% viewfinder coverage.
D3 has 100% viewfinder coverage.

Which would you choose on a limited budget? :)

And why would a D300 be on the same class as a D90?

D90 without a doubt.

Well, been offered a used D80 for $700 low shuttle count. That is almost half the price of a new D90 body.

Hard to decide, so I ask. Thanks!

Technology changes so fast.

Is it worth to get a new D90 now or a used D80 for serious amateur shoOTS?

Just a note, I have several used AFD lenses.

:dunno:

you know the answer yourself.... read carefully......

D300 and D90 are very different from each other. But they do share the same sensor, thus their performance with regard to ISO, dynamic range should be the same.

If you think so, then I got nothing else to say...

Just think about the price difference. If there is nothing much, why would they bother coming out with a D300?

Sheesh...

well zac, in some ways the image quality of the D90 could be better than d300 esp at high iso. not sure if firmware updates for d300 solve this issue.

but i'm perfectly happy with my 300. just that if TS is a slide film user, he won't be satisfied with the crop frame cameras.. but if u wanna talk about DX vs negative film, colour aside, digital wins IMHO.

even for FX vs slide, FX just gives better high iso and can go wider. nothing else

ooops. I sense some tension building here...
There is no doubt that there will be a bit of bias in each person's opinion, depending on what camera they own.
A D300 owner (or someone set on getting a D300 soon) would likely feel a bit insulted to hear a comment "not much difference between D90 and D300".

OK let's be a bit more objective here. The TS is asking to choose between used D80 ($700) and new D90 ($1500 or thereabouts for body only).

Obviously, cost is a major factor, or else D80 wouldn't even be in the picture.
D90 beats D80 in a few critical areas, namely high-ISO performance and having D-movie function. Whether this justifies that extra moolah needed, only the TS knows. Each person has different needs/wants.
If you're the type who likes to get the latest tech, damn the depreciation (c'mon, admit it! You are!! :) ), I think the choice is obvious...

side note: When you're bored of your D90 in a few month's time, drop me a PM hor! ;) By then it'd be time to upgrade MY D80!!

I'm not trying to increase tension here. But what I feel is that you guys have to look at more factors in comparing a camera than just sensor type and simply ISO performance.

So a more objective comparision would be how one utilises a camera. Do you need the functions readily reachable? And as the TS mentioned that he's looking for a serious amateur camera, thus I mentioned that he could also consider looking at a D300 as the price has gone down recently.

It's all still up to the TS to decide. After-all, what is given here is ONLY suggestions.

HEHEH hard to choose when it comes to this, maybe if u have the chance to tryout both ... it will ease ure opinions.

Try out both before buying my friend. feel it .. use it .. then decide. specs change anytime however you must know your equipment strength and weakness. Enjoy your passion
