The Indonesian govt tested the pilots for drugs - not medical pharmaceutical drugs. Tested for narcotics.

so i guess they weren't high, they just screwed up. if indeed they weren't doing ILS approach / full automated approach, they should clearly see that they're going to fall short...like very short?

wait for sempai 9V to weigh in... although here is a PK not a 9V

They should test them for Samba Chilli too :bsmilie:

Indo Samba Chilli too hot so they dive into the water :bsmilie:

Read in today's paper they are banned from flying in Europe. I wonder do they fly here with such bad record and if so why?

Singapore is a small island state and we cannot afford such incident. So many HDB around the air port. If they can't get their acts together don't fly out of their country.

All Indonesian airlines were banned, including Garuda. For the Europeans, security has priority. Here in Asian, and also considering the position of SG as hub the decision was maybe also influenced by regional political and economical factors that are irrelevant for EU. I guess it's a calculated risk: damage from a crash landing vs. financial / reputation damage of not having the passengers here in SG.

Runway09 does not have ILS.

Saw the map. The proper name is Ngurah Rai International Airport though TV news casters call it Denpasar Airport. Runway is 8,858 feet or 2,700 m. Changi Airport runway is 4,000m.

A lucky escape.

The water must be shallow there. Or else whole plane under water and all passengers+crew drowned.
If plane had landed a bit to the right, it would have hit rocks, exploded and burnt all passengers+crew.

Oh, the plane was trying to land on the runway in the direction from the sea. The plane did not even manage to land on the runway.
It missed the start of the run way and landed in the water instead. Looks like the pilot aimed wrongly.
Or he had too much blind faith in the instrument landing system (ILS).

Maybe some of the early reports by blur journalists were wrong - that the plane overshot the runway and ended in the sea.

Ngurah Rai is local Indonesian name for the airport whereas Denpasar is IATA name for the same airport.
Picture shows plane pointing away from land, looked more like an overshoot than short of runway.

It was reported that he cannot see the runway! Alamak, no those night vision or infra red technology meh?

Each plane carries more than 100 people. Surely more can be done unless we don't have the technology. :(

The pilot was trying to attempt a simulated carrier landing. Or maybe he was attempting to VIFF.

Er... What has IR or NV got to do with landing in this case when it was in broad daylight?

It's a very easy to spot runway, but it is possible for there to be heavy glare from the sun reflecting off the ocean. In which case, it makes you wonder why he can't afford sunglasses

i thought pilots never considered themselves proper pilots until they got a nice pair of sunglasses

The pilots are too eager to get to the beach and swim with bikini girls :bsmilie:

...Or cos of that he was distracted looking out of the window while making his approach to land... :) :)

i hope he wasn't grabbing the wrong control column, if you know what i mean.

meow.

Har? I read it was raining and visibility was poor! Somehow we all read different versions. Haha

Eh you know that NVGs aren't used by commercial pilots at all right? And IR does not work even if visibility is piss poor cos it reads heat signatures leh. Unless you are saying the runway emits heat like a human body during rain? I dunno man. Hahahahaha.

The FLIR we used on airborne EO sensor package is able to penetrate cloud cover and precipitation in Mid-Wavelength Infrared (MWIR) and Long-Wavelength Infrared (LWIR) with a white hot display output.

Urban areas tend to light up very well due to heat residue build up and temperature difference between surrounding environments. They also penetrate materials of a fabric nature, and with its long range zoom spotter, you can actually see couples piak, piak behind the curtains in their bedroom.

due to the paperwork and report writing and investigation if go around is required, maybe these pilots prefer not to go around at all costs. . .
