A guide to India 2007 (Delhi, Allahabad, Varanasi, Agra)

Then, our bad luck looms...

First, we realised the platform to board our train has been changed. Argh!! Have to carry all our bags to the next platform.
Second, it was 1 hour late.

_DSC2424.jpg

The consolation. More photos from the platform. haa haa

We have to keep checking with the local that we are indeed at the correct platform and the train we are waiting for is going to Varanasi. We saw some caucasian and confirmed that they are going to Varanasi too..

In fact, our train are 1.5 hour late.. Nevermind... on we board the train.

We settled quickly but we soon found that the non-aircon sleeper is much dirtier. Well, only 3 hours of ride.. Not going to kill us.

We realised that the train stopped a lot along the way. After the train has travelled for 3 hrs+, I can't stop asking:

"Are we there yet?"
"Are we there yet?"
"Are we there yet?"
"Are we there yet?"
"Are we there yet?"
"Are we there yet?"
"Are we there yet?"
"Are we there yet?"

Haa haa.. hope I didn't drive them crazy with this.

We have a long stop at an unknown place for quite a while.. I begin to grow impatient.. I know. I know.. Patience is a photographer greatest virtue but I really can't help it..

Checking with a young man, who happened to work for the Indian Railway, show us some light.

One, we took the longer train route from Allahabad to Varanasi. There is infact a shorter route... Why didn't the ticket person told us?
Two, there is some repair on the rail and our train are delayed because it's only a one-track rail.

Even the local grew restless.

A 3 hours fun ride quickly became a 7 hrs hell ride.. L has motion sickness, R was hungry, Z seem rather cool about it while I curse the low batt of my PSP..

_DSC2436.jpg

Hawkers board the train at different place to sell stuff.. Tea, samosa, tibits, peanuts and so on.

It is on this trains that I tried the roast nut and R tried the sliced carrot in some sauce.

When we reached Varanasi, it's already 6pm+. We are further delayed while waiting to move into the station. There is some pungent smell coming from the area and we have no where to escape, trapped in the train. Later, we found that there is a diesel plant in that area.. Think Z and L become sick after breathing in too much of this.

Varanasi has a good tourist office but much smaller than the one in Delhi. We immediately booked our train ticket to Agra but, more bad luck, there is only places in non-aircon sleeper class. We had no choice.

The "make-shift" tourist table in the station is quite helpful. Telling us the "correct" fare to pay for rickshaw to the main ghats of Varanasi. As usual, we bargain a while before we got the "correct" fare to ride on the rickshaw.

When we reached the hotel (the 1st hotel that we wanted was fully booked!, how unlucky can u get?), we can't do much but to have our dinner. L was so sick that she has to stay in the hotel.

3 of us guy pigged out at a nearby resturant chalking up Sing$30+ (which is a lot by the standard there).

We are not heartless. We tabao "Singaporean" fried rice for L and it was packed with those red plastic bag, they dun have those plastic container that we are so used too .. Poor L.

A video on one of the rickshaw ride.. Pardon the horns... haahaa :bsmilie:

oh boy ! This is some adventure !!! Keep going. I am eager to read on :D

yah lor..was sick and hungry and hotel room is cold...suddenly the fried rice the guys bought was the yummies food. Z even lent me his spoon... shiok...re-energize after that.. hahaha:bsmilie: cannot take the long rail ride ..stop and go, stop and go..and then kana the super toxic smell from some factories....wah lao...

horns ? what horns ? that's a way of life. Starting from the lowliest motorbike fella to the monster trucks, everyone honks ;( . Its a way of life - "Give me way", "Give me way" :D

As usual, all good photographer wake up early to catch the morning light. 5am and we are up and going. We tried to find our way to the Meer Ghat where all the boat are.

In the dark narrow alley of varanasi, we met our boatman. He just show up out of nowhere and started asking where we are going. A bit apprehensive at first but we trust our guts feeling. Taking a risk, we followed him. The tourist police has already informed us the "correct" price for a boat for 4 person and we nego till that.

A little gal was selling some offering and the tourist in us wanted to experience it. So, all of us bought the floating offering (with flower and a candle) and make our offering to the sacred river of India, the Ganges.

Thanks for sharing this lovely series...really a stark but wonderful contrast to our life here :)

Srini: Indeed it's quite an adventure.. We had fun despite a bit shaken by some of the experiences.

wong1979,londonray: Glad you all like it.. Hope I dun appear too long winded..

Thakfully, the sun began to shine and shutter speed can be increased for a sharper pic.

_DSC2473.jpg

Beside bathing and praying, some folks are working out. This senior is using a gada. Later, we found out that he's a very good singer as well..

_DSC2493.jpg

I read that the local has been performing this daily ritual for a long time, dating back thousands of years.

_DSC2525.jpg

More shampoo time.

Gong Xi Fa Cai to all CSers.

bryan, is there something's wrong with the post processing? how come there is a white rim around the red sun?

The stuff on the pan was not meat, its various vegetables (mainly potato) mashed up. Its actually very tasty just ask them to reduce the spices as some of them make it very spicy.

Most probably the soap you want to know about is Lifebuoy - a Hindustan Lever (Unilever in India) product. Its a red bar of soap and can act as soap, shampoo and sometimes washing soap all in one he he

Great photographs , but makes me homesick...

Zoosh: Not too sure but the original pic has very low contrast and level. Maybe adjusting have that result on the sun. Did a bit of USM to the pic. Could be due to that to.. Thanks for pointing out.. Will retry doing it when I am done with the rest.

maddyks: Thanks for the info on the soup. But really amazed by the amount of foams it can generate.. Sorry to make you homesick.. but I will take that as a compliment.. Hope you can return home soon. Are you from Varanasi?

There you are.. The wrestler turned singer. After he had his swing with the gada, he was singing with another guy at the ghat. A pity we dun understand what they are singing about but they do have very nice and powerful vocal. My guess will be singing in praise of god, mostly like Shiva. Hope I am not wrong on this.

Meditation and practising of religion are common sight on the ghats.. The golden hour light gave a very nice golden cast to all the picture.. Wht more can we asked for.

That's why it was recommended that you travel by airconditioned class. Anyways, no worries, you did what a few million Indians do on a daily basis - travel by sleeper class :D

You guys are brave and adventurous

Bro,
Did this figure out you were shooting him ? Did he object ? Or was it a stealth shot and immediately point camera elsewhere ;) ?

Your pics are very nice. They depict the day to day life in India very well.
And i like the narrative, because i am long winded too :bsmilie:

Srini: More like we can't get a seat on the aircon class.. haa haa . For the man in foam. He did spotted me shooting him. Thus, the look.. haa haa He seem to be ok with it and smile back. Glad you like the narrative.

More bathing, washing and brushing of teeth. I noticed that some local used a "stick" which appeared to be a twig to brush their teeth. This local seem to be using his finger as a toothbrush.

Sadhus holy man taking a morning stroll.

_DSC2544.jpg

I quite like the looks from this old man. Pity I decided to crop off the top of head while shooting then.

Yea a bit homesick.. Not from Varanasi but India and that is enough for me ;)

Anyway about the pics of the ladies bathing, you might want to be a bit more careful when you are shooting them as the male members around may not take to it too kindly. Just a caution :)

The stick is usually a twig from a tree called Neem - extremely bitter but is a good way to keep your teeth clean. Also it can be from a shrub called Babool - very good for the teeth. You should try once, it is supposed to be better than toothpaste.

Bro,
Second that.
You should've exercised a bit of caution. Lucky you didn't get into trouble.
Same goes when taking photos of women in the middle east. :nono:

Got me BIG LADY, no worries...well, for the worst, we run!!

we do that from the boat.....

maddyks, asterixsg: Thanks for the advise. We are aware that Indian ladies dun really like to be photographed in general (thru guide book and internet).Normally, I will see the situation before shooting. I always smile and see if they display any dislike or annoyances towards my camera. So far, haven't got much trouble. Will exercise extra caution if I got the chance to vist India again or middle east.

maddyks: is the neem/nabool for sale or they just happened to pluck it out of the tree?

One of the most special ghat, in my opinion, in Varanasi is the buring ghat, Manikarnika ghat. Many people come to Varanasi to die or to be cremated. Large block of woods are stacked up and the body are wrapped in silk and place on them for cremation.

_DSC2591.jpg

_DSC2598.jpg

We are shown around the place by a guide. The guide informed us that we are not allowed to take picture of the deceased or the burning process. If you don't capture the deceased in the frame, it's allowed.

_DSC2596.jpg

Cow roam freely in Varanasi, even at the burning ghat. He was munching on the flower offering when I rudely disturted his breakfeast.

_DSC2602.jpg

Met this 2 holy man who have just finished some sort of ritual at the ghat.

The guide explained that all the "workers" are volunteers who relatives are to be cremated there.
