Try

- Canon 17-40mm f4 L
- *Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 DC
- Sigma 18-125mm f3.5-5.6 DC

do not get EF-S lens as it will not work with your 300D

* recommended

yeah me going 4 the trip...will PM u later...

Try the EF-S 17-85 IS f4-5.6. It is equivalent to the EF 28-135 IS f4-5.6 on film camera. These will be the range that you'll use most of the time in your travel. A superzoom like the Sigma 28-200, 28-300, 18-125 are more versatile but they tend to compromise on image quality. While I believe that the images produce by these superzooms will be acceptable, the Canon EF-S 17-85 IS should be able to produce sharper pictures. And the IS is definitely a big bonus, helpful when carrying a tripod around during a tour is too troublesome.

Hi kelccm,

The EF-S 17-85 IS is not equivalent to the EF 28-135 IS, leh! Canon made the EF-S series to take advantage of the smaller sensor size compared to 35mm by reducing the glass size (image circle) to fit the smaller sensor. But in terms of focal length, 17-85mm is still 17-85mm.

Have a read in www.dpreview.com in the LEARN section on left hand side.

But if weight is a major concern, then EF-S is the way to go! Lens-wise, that is :)

Look at your own past pictures and styles, and buy what you need. I also love shooting landscapes and some of my best landscape come from 200mm end :)
Can't really advise on a *single* travel lens, although I'm tempted by the Sigma 18-125. I'm happy with my usual travel "kit" now, but there are places/occasions where I can only bring 1 lens.... :(

My current travel "kit"
EF17-40 f4L
EF70-200 f4L
EF50 f1.8

Focal lengths are different but but it offers similar field of view on a 1.6x crop factor DSLR to that of a 28-135 IS on a full frame/35mm camera. You could just treat it as a 27-136 on a 1.6 crop factor DSLR. The focal length is simply a proxy for field of view.

my travel kit is simply the Sigma 18-125 DC.

Me using tamron 28-75 f2.8 Di Sp .So far so good :)

I did a Europe trip with a 18-55 (wide backup) and 24-85 (main). The 18-55 was OK at F8-11 and I only used it when I required wide shots - the 18-20 range.

Did a trip using only the 17-40L (never touched the 18-55 once I got the 17-40 - difference is like BMW and Kia)

Next trip I will bring 17-40L (main) AND 24-85 (long backup).

I suppose the 17-85 IS does cover the range but the 17-40L is sooooo good I really must have it.

walkabt:
(my choices)
Tamron 28-75 F/2.8 (lose a bit on the wide side, but price is good abt S$600-700 and constant 2.8 and image quality is  one of the lens in my to buy list)

Canon 17-40L F/4 (lose a bit on the tele, price is abt $1150, good quality and good resale value if want to sell, i own this and love it)

Canon 17-85IS (good range, never tried before so do not know the image quality but my guess that is not as good as L lens, quite expensive, but got IS which can help you to go down abt 2 stops)

Can consider Canon 28-135IS or Canon 28-105 this 2 lens are good, but you will lose on the wide side, the 28-135 cost abt $800 (quite ex).

My 0.02 cents

good lens.

if you want faster lens, try sigma 18-50mm f2.8 DC

Agree! Sigma 18-125 is a good travel lens.... at the wide end its f3.5...
Used it for various shoots and it never failed to impress!
:)

I'm also constantly looking for best lens to suit my shooting.

EF 17-40 f/4L
Best lens i've used so far. Has accompanied me on countless trips. Just amazing lens, makes ur trip worth so much. But range a bit short, dun like to change lens often...so sold it away to get 17-85IS. Not a very good decision... read on...

EF-S 17-85 f/4-5.6IS
If u want best range then this is the one...Image quality is quite good, but its pricey! Its quite slow, most of the time u have to stop down to get good image quality. IS is only useful if u handheld at low light. My copy got obvious vignetting at 17mm, must stop down to at least f/8. I need faster lens...sold again

Sigma 18-50 f/2.8EX DC <= currently using this now
Another good lens here, sharpness & color almost on par with 17-40L, although corner a bit soft. f/2.8 very useful. The built is very solid as well. I would gladly choose this over 17-40L. Highly recommended

I looked at the 300D the lens on it says Canon Zoom Lens EF-S 18-55mm.

My favourite is 16-35 EF and 10-22 EFS.

Since you mention ONE lens,I would recommand the 28-300 f2.8.
