The noise filter function can be turned off TOTALLY on the 410/510.
You will get monochromatic grains even at ISO 100.
The 410 comes with four noise filter settings: OFF, LOW, STANDARD and HIGH.
So I think:
OFF to replicate film
LOW is probably for ISO 100 - 200
STANDARD for 400 - 800
and HIGH for 1600

thats good to hear, I love this, olympus just gave the user the option on how the degree of noise filter is used.

How's the performance of the E-410's built-in flash?. Read from DpReview forum that it's quite disappointing.

From earlier tests, it is quite decent and generally, it would have made it easily to the top 5 among all DSLRs' Auto WB test...
But to compare to the E-1... you must be kidding me... Currently nothing beats the E-1. Unless you use a Colour Meter and manually adjust the WB value. LOL.
I sometimes wonder what these people are thinking...
Don't know... I've never used the pop-up flash... don't even want to actually! ;p
It obviously cannot beat the E-1, but it beats the E-3XX and E-500 easy.

This product may not be available in your part of the world, but what I use (even if I did own the E-1) is a product called QPcard201 along with QPcolorsoft501...what you do is turn OFF the auto white balance (I set mine to the one-touch white balance) and switch to JPEG, take one picture with the card, and as long as the light doesn't change keep shooting (if the light does change you simply take another image of the card in the new light). Then when you get back to the computer run the QPcolorsoft501 program, load the image with the card, mark the card in the image, then save the colour profile for that shoot and batch process the rest of the images...the images are then saved in Adobe colour space, ready to print with the right colours; no more mucking about in RAW, or spending hours on each image trying to get the colour right.

how abt the flash.. what model is good for general purpose?
what other accessories i may need?
tks for the help.. btw, i am very very unfamiliar with digital slr.. been enjoying film all the time.. OM slr, hasselblad 503, large format, etc.. now looking for a general purpopse, compact, light weight dslr system for doing machine gun shots... streetphoto, family or friend gathering, etc. Hassy a bit mah huan sometime for these purposes.

Welcome to the family of Four Thirds.
Here is a forum page where you can read up on user reviews on the ZD lenses. You should find a lot of information there. Some members went wild and really tested the weatherproofing to the extreme end... and were not disappointed.
