Red light district? Sorry, bad joke of the day. Unique lighting.

I saw some "stars" at the top right quarter.

Magnificent Petra!

tks:) Petra is indeed quite magnificent. I have always wanted to visit ever since I saw some photos of it. Never regret despite some of the unpleasant encounters :)

haha, more like a Red Light Palace for the district and i was (along with many hundreds of others) practitioners of this special trade that walked the 2km candle lit dirt track that evening ;) ah yes, the unique lighting was due to that red glow from the hundreds of candles.

yup, what you see are indeed stars :)

#8c - Waited long enough for tourists to clear before taking this shot of the Treasury

A visit to Petra would not be complete without making the 'pilgrimage' to the Monastery. Seated atop another mountain, donkeys (costs 5 JD one way) are the transportation of choice for most visitors for the 800+ steps but I chose to walk up taking photos along the way. As I made my way up, I saw that the caddies would often push, drag and even kick the donkeys on their butts to hurry the animals. I believe donkeys have thick skin but then I still believe they felt the pain or else they wouldn't have moved right ? At that point I was glad that I didn't cause any harm to any donkey. However, the day was hot, my gear was heavy (despite an already lighter setup) ...thirsty and soared, soon I began to regret not taking the donkey :) but I pressed on and after about 35 mins, I was finally rewarded with this....

#8f - This one caught my eyes. While others were clearly taking a breather in the shade (with one even on its side!), this one chose to stand in the open, close to the cliff edge, looking dazed. Was it contemplating suicide after all that tortures ? :)

The donkey is praying to have more people like you so that they won't be tortured :D

haha, i may have not taken the donkey for a few reasons

1. i didn't like the smell of the donkey
2. i didn't want to part with the money
3. i wanted to take photos along the walk
4. i was scared of taking the donkey, afraid of heights
5. i was afraid that i might fall together with my gears
6. i am anti-cruelty towards animals

in fact, i saw a number of tourists, a few of them pretty overweight, taking the walk up. they were so tired, taking a lot of breaks in between but just didn't want to take the donkey...maybe they didn't want to torture the donkeys too

Also saw these Bedouins kids on the mountain where their mothers set up souvenirs stalls. It is said that Bedouins men marry up to 4 women and can have up to 33 kids*...such a big family would certainly need the women to go out and make a living. Some kids skip schools at times to help out, some don't even get to have educations at all. We were advised not to buy things from the kids as that would encourage them to skip schools...it was tough to look away from their innocent eyes.

* I am still puzzled as to how the number of 33 came about, especially when split between 4 wives...how ? hmm

#8h - This girl promised she would go back to school if we bought some postcards from her. At the end, we paid 1 JD for some but I doubt she would go back to school...she spoke good English though.

Day 9 - This morning we made our way to Wadi Rum. Wadi means Valley and Rum means Mountain so it is Valley of the Mountains in English. One of the Indiana Jones movies and Lawrence of Arabia were shot here. The set of the latter has even been converted to some lodging or sort.

Wadi Rum is vast, littered with strange rock formations shaped by wind erosions over hundreds of thousands of years.

Very nice and sharp. You managed to capture without any tourists / people in the shot...

LOL! Poor camel, having to feed so many...

I went in during the 'off-peak' hours :) Most people would be there during the evening for sunset shot of this rock but I had time constraint (went over to Dead Sea after that) so I arranged to go into Wadi Rum in the morning. Didn't see many tourists except for another group on ATV :)

haha, not just one camel lah.

Another view of the rock, with sky less blown :)

You still have good photos considering the circumstances. I am going to the same two countries this month and now I am a bit scared by your description of the experiences. Can you share which tour operator you went with for the Egypt leg?

I hope other than being fleeced here and there, there is no other more serious damage done to you during the trip.

:o

stunning captures you got ! can print on canvas hang on home wall.... pretty sure visitors will ask where you bought them from :)
