For me if you really require low light focusing, you should use only the center point af. The centre point af has proven that it is quite infallible. At night, with a F4 lens, it can lock onto a low contrast(low not no).
That said, I have yet to put it against a 1D camera, but against the older models, I think it'd be a close shave.
